The UK will provide an additional £1 billion of military support to Ukraine.
This will go towards capabilities including sophisticated air defence systems, innovative new electronic warfare equipment and vital kit for Ukrainian soldiers. 🇺🇦
We’re investing £1bn to install digital signalling on one of the UK’s busiest rail routes.
This cutting edge technology will replace infrastructure that’s been in place since Victorian times and bring our railway into the 21st century.
Our railway is a proud part of our history and has served us well for 200 years, but if we want it to serve us for the next 200 then it must move with the times and banish the outdated working practices that are holding it back...🧵
The gentleman in the audience is spot on👇
Unions need to allow our railway to modernise for the 21st century.
Union leaders cannot bring this country to a standstill at their will. It is essential that people's lives are not unduly disrupted and our economy keeps ticking. That's why I am pleased to see this change to the law that will make access to skilled, temporary staff far easier.
We've introduced new legislation to make it easier for all sectors affected by strike action to use temporary agency workers.
Businesses & services will be able to use employment providers to help fill vital gaps & minimise the impact on public services.
Latest data shows traffic levels were stable on the roads yesterday, demonstrating RMT’s action is not disrupting the wider transport network as they expected, and shows the need to reform rail services in line with changing travel habits #railreforms
The RMT made many false claims yesterday including that we don’t want to give workers a fair deal. We want to give workers a payrise but the railways cost taxpayers £600 per household during Covid. We must reform so they don't take more than its fair share of public funding. 1/3
The strikes today are wrong and unnecessary.
We’ve just announced a further £15m in funding 💸 for 9 promising Restoring Your Railway schemes, helping to reopen railway lines and stations that were lost decades ago, showing our commitment to growing our historic railway network 🚂#RestoringYourRailway
🚂good news for Aldridge 🚂
£150k secured for Aldridge Train Station🚂
This new money from Government is the final piece in the jigsaw unlocking £30MILLION already set aside to build the station ✅
Now we press on with the business case & get on with the job of getting this station open for residents 💪🏻
Over 2,000 #Ukrainians have safely arrived at their UK destinations through our free onward travel scheme & I'm delighted that we're extending the scheme for another 6 months🚆
Our rail & wider transport network continues to stand with those fleeing Putin's brutal invasion💙💛
Thrilled to announce further funding for 9 Restoring Your Railway schemes to help reopen former lines and stations and reconnect people & businesses to the railways🛤️
Yet another example of how we're strengthening and expanding our great railways! #RestoringYourRailway
To the Ukrainian people: the UK is with you and we will be with you until you ultimately prevail.
In summary, why do we need to reform our railways?:
🚄Deliver better value for money for taxpayers
🚄We need to adapt to passengers' new train travel habits
🚄Deliver a modern, simpler & fairer transport network for passengers & freight customers
Latest stats from @railandroad show just how much the pandemic, and changing working patterns, have hit the railway.
To create a rail industry that is fit for the future we need to work together to make it financially sustainable. Strikes will harm it just as it’s recovering.
I am immensely proud of our railway network, but vital changes are needed if it is to keep pace with modern life.
Strikes should be the last resort, and today I will deliver a speech setting out the change and collaboration needed to overhaul the industry and secure its future.
Today, on the 40th anniversary of the end of the Falklands Conflict, we remember the 255 members of service personnel who died to protect the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.
June 14th is #LiberationDay in the #FalklandIslands & 2022 marks the 40th anniversary of the end of the #Falklands War. We thank all those who made sacrifices in defence in 1982 & continue to secure our freedom @BFSouthAtlantic #WeWillRememberThem
We cannot give way to rail strike blackmail – this is a defining moment for Britain
