A @BritishArmy piper played a lament on the beaches of Arromanches this morning at 0725 - marking 80 years to the minute since the beach invasion of Normandy began.

Today the Prime Minister gathered with veterans in Normandy to honour the brave personnel who fell on D-Day.

It is important that we remember their stories.

On 6 June 1944, Allied troops landed on the Normandy beaches and the battle to liberate Europe began.

80 years on since D-Day, the largest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our freedom.

80 years since D-Day.

80 years since the largest seaborne invasion in history.

80 years since the heroic efforts of those who landed on the beaches of Normandy to liberate Europe from Nazi tyranny.

80 years of peace in Western Europe since.

Today we say thank you.

🕊️ Today, alongside D-Day veterans, thousands of members of the public gathered in Portsmouth to express their gratitude for their courage and sacrifice 80 years ago.

👏 Their valour shaped our history and continues to inspire us.
