Lovely afternoon with good friends @glyndebourne to see Handel‘s Saul. Beautifully sung by Christopher Purves, Iestyn Davies, Soraya Mafi, Linard Vrielink, Sarah Brady and the brilliant cast. Handel’s music at its best with an imaginative, humorous and inventive staging.

Very constructive meeting with US Education Secretary, Linda McMahon today in Washington DC. We discussed closing the attainment gap; phonics; maths; & school choice.I may also have mentioned that England was now 4th in the world in reading & has risen from 27th to 11th in Maths!

8.5 hours of daily education plus an optional further hour of extra curricula is how students at Creo College Prep in the Bronx, NYC are able to fulfil their ambitions - my visit to this exemplary charter school yesterday, hosted by the brilliant Principal, Ben Samuels-Kallow.

Hugely enjoyed talking to inspiring maths professor and podcaster, Anna Stokke, about England’s education reforms. Chalk & Talk | From decline to top rankings: How England transformed education with Nick Gibb (Ep 49) on Podbean.

🚨 Fantastic new episode is here! England reversed its academic decline—and now ranks 4th in reading on PIRLS and highest-performing non-Asian country on TIMSS. Former Minister @NickGibbUK shares how evidence-based reforms in reading & math made it happen. Link below ⬇️

A fine interview with Sir @NickGibbUK by @Samfr @timd_IFG & @FinnBaker3. He would have made an excellent Education Secretary, but became the crucial policy anchor and knowledge repository (indeed, the only constant) through the post-Gove churn in the DfE. He should write a book.

This is the best interview with @NickGibbUK I've ever read: behind the scenes on the battle to get phonics taught in schools and the Y1 phonics check 'stick'.

This evening another Half Six Fix at the Barbican; this time one of my all time favourite symphonies - Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, with the LSO conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano. All five movements were, frankly, fantastic. ⁦@BarbicanCentre⁩

Sound it out: Victorian children improve reading ‘leaps and bounds’ thanks to phonics | Australian education | The Guardian

Celebrating the completion of our book, ‘Reforming Lessons’, with my co-author, Robert Peal. It will be published in late August by Routledge. The book tells the story of the education reforms introduced between 2010 and 2024, and why they have proved to be so successful. ⁦

Very enjoyable discussion yesterday with the delegation from Antwerp to discuss the implementation of knowledge-rich curricula in their schools. Delegation led by Antwerp’s Alderman for Education ⁦@NabillaAitDaoud⁩ & advised by ⁦@MachteldVerbru1⁩ of Thomas More Uni.

Exhilarating visit to the London College of Fashion last week, at the invitation of Prof Andrew Teverson, Pro Vice-Chancellor UAL and head of the London College of Fashion. An important British institution with 6000 students. Creativity at its best. ⁦@LCFLondon⁩ @TeversonA

What an inspiring meeting this morning with Jasmine Lane, head of literacy and EAL at Trinity Academy, Brixton in London. Committed to high expectations and every child reading fluently and prolifically. Writes under the name: Ms. Jasmine’s Blog. @MsJasmineMN

Spoke today at the PISA for Schools conference in New Delhi, India. Explained the importance of PISA - which showed the UK declining between 2000 & 2009. Following our reforms, England has from 27th in maths in 2009 to 11th in 2022 (PISA) & 4th in reading (PIRLS).

A super new Singapore International School to open in Swan Bay, Ho Chi Minh City - here with Toni Hatten-Roberts (MSA), Ricky Tan (SIS) and Michael Roberts (SIS). I’m the one in the shades.

An honour to meet Emily Hanford of ‘Sold a Story’ podcast, a must-listen for anyone who cares about children’s reading. With AEI’s Robert Pondiscio who’s done so much to promote the importance of knowledge in the curriculum. Photo: Aaron Clamage ©️AEI.⁦@AEI @ehanford

What Can the US Learn from England’s Rise in Reading Scores? A Conversation with Former Education Minister Nick Gibb | American Enterprise Institute - AEI

The 'immovable schools minister' Nick Gibb has been at the heart of the past decade's reforms

He reflects on why politicians have a duty to interfere, warns against trying to please everyone, and reveals he had plans to force schools to follow the trad rules in classrooms 😶…

Congratulations to Bridget Phillipson, who will have the best job in Government. I’ve written in today’s TES about some of the challenges she and her new Schools Minister face. ⁦@bphillipsonMP⁩ ⁦@tes⁩

My article for the Daily Telegraph on the 2022 PISA results announced this morning. England rises from 17th place to 11th place in maths, out of 81 countries.

Over the last few weeks I have been discussing taking up a diplomatic role after the general election. To enable me to do so I have asked the Prime Minister if I can step down from the government at the reshuffle and he has agreed. 1/5

In 2017 we set out to reduce the workload of Reception class teachers, freeing them to focus more of their time developing children’s communication and language. At the time, these reforms proved controversial, but the evaluation shows what a success these reforms have been.

No more rip-off degrees.

No more low aspiration.

No more denigration of technical education.

Just the best education system in the western world.

A brilliant speech by @RishiSunak. We're delivering the long-term reforms to secure a brighter future for our children.

Thanks to the hard work of schools, colleges, councils and academy trusts, 70% of the schools impacted by RAAC have been open for face-to-face education this week.

Yesterday afternoon, I updated the House of Commons on the steps we are taking to minimise disruption to education.

In 2010, we made transformational reforms to our school system so we could raise standards

These reforms have been an overwhelming success with 88% of schools now rated good or outstanding, up from 68% in 2010
