Today, the @Nytimes #trivia asks: “Who was the youngest solo artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart?” Answer: Stevie Wonder at 13.

Lucky Peterson, however, bested Wonder by hitting the @Billboard R&B chart at age 6 with a song co-produced by Willie Dixon. #bluesmusic #history

Stumbled across this with @Jesse_Norman, @MatthewdAncona and Laura Spirit on the dearth of ideas in our modern politics. Worth a listen. https://open.spotify.com/episode/5SHpY4VnFahBXz0CYv95G8?si=7b3O17veQ26gX-lU_vUdSw&utm_source=copy-link

“For you to prolong this charade not only insults the electorate, and the people who support, volunteer, represent and campaign for our party; it makes a decisive change of government at the next election much more likely.  That is potentially catastrophic for this country.“

I have supported Boris Johnson for 15 years, for the London Mayoralty and for PM. Very sadly, I have written to him to say I can no longer do so, for the reasons set out below.

My article "Copying and Computing Tables in Late Medieval Monasteries" has just been published (fully open-access)!

Here's a 🧵 about it.

"Today we have witnessed British history being made" says @FloellaBenjamin as Windrush Monument unveiled. The Windrush story is not defined by wrongs that are still to be righted, she says, though they must be, but by pride in the contribution & hope for our future #WindrushDay

Fantastic morning to open the Herefordshire Trail! At the Market House in Ross-on-Wye, heading towards Little Dewchurch 🍎

The absolute pits of a take. You cannot seriously call yourself a conservative and have such flagrant disregard for institutions and constitutional norms. Whether Geidt was right to resign, or not, the idea we don't need checks and balances in our constitution is dangerous. https://twitter.com/darrengrimes_/status/1537400655798755329

Darren Grimes @darrengrimes_

Why do we even need a Government ethics adviser? The only ethics adviser we need is the ballot box.

I’m launching @unlockdigital_, a new initiative I’ve co-founded with Wol Kolade to help digitally upskill Londoners.

Why?

Because the MAJORITY of jobs today require digital skills and that number is increasing but the take-up of IT courses is declining yearly 1/4

A modicum of transparency may now be introduced to the overseas funding of univs. Academics have long declared their funders, but univs have not. The govt's proposal is imperfect but necessary. Law was needed.
Thanks @Jesse_Norman @jamesmurray88.

Impressed with our @nmite_ac new Skylon campus today, on my first look around as it's nearing completion. Fantastic new Studio teaching spaces, our Centres for Automated Manufacturing and Timber Technology. #Hereford #HE

Relieved to see the future of the Union is secure!

(I mean, honestly, just how long have the SNP had to come up with something better than this?)

"The difference between mathematicians and physicists is that after physicists prove a big result they think it is fantastic but after mathematicians prove a big result they think it is trivial" — Lucien Szpiro

I leave the politics of this broadside to others. But the comments by @Jesse_Norman about the lack of long-term planning and investment in resilience against future threats + the risks of letting campaigning take the place of governing all chime with my analysis in Hard Choices. https://twitter.com/Jesse_Norman/status/1533699235417403393

I have supported Boris Johnson for 15 years, for the London Mayoralty and for PM. Very sadly, I have written to him to say I can no longer do so, for the reasons set out below.

5/ Boris won the election with a type of May’s Brexit, but the #NIprotocol bill would convert it, in defiance of the election manifesto into Mogg’s Brexit.

The bill isn’t just immoral or illegal. It’s also dammed foolish.

Jesse Norman wrote an excellent book on Burke. We’re currently planning work on Burke and Bristol for 2024 and @Jesse_Norman will be involved.

Worth reading from @Jesse_Norman "Individualism in government has been purged of any connection to the local, the social, the greater public interest, and exists merely in the discharge of its own vanity." https://www.ft.com/content/0a2401a9-3113-48d9-9655-4013c114665b

Today is The Chief of the General Staff’s last day. General Sir Mark Carleton-Smith KCB CBE ADC Gen has been in post since 2018, the pinnacle of a 40-year career. Thank you, for everything you have done for your country and the #BritishArmy. Best wishes for the future.

This oped by @Jesse_Norman on why he wrote a letter of no-confidence in Boris Johnson is eloquent and full of historical sweep. Fascinating. https://www.ft.com/content/0a2401a9-3113-48d9-9655-4013c114665b
