The Ottomans sincerely believed that they were liberating Europe from the intolerance, obscurantism and superstition of the Roman church. And at least some English radicals - possibly including John Locke - saw things the same way.

As a minister, I wrote to the FCA and told them mandatory DEI targets were regulatory overreach, well beyond their remit.

They brushed this off, knowing Labour love this stuff and we'll get more of it with Labour’s Race Equality Act.

Quick recap on the impact of #Trump's tariffs on the UK...

My new piece looks at why Labour's wrong to abolish the rule that puts failing schools under new management.
With school leaders, the Children's Commissioner, the former Chief Schools Commissioner & even Labour MPs warning this is a mistake, surely it's time for a rethink? (1/2)

Good Friday is the day when Christians remember the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ.

Today, many congregations will take part in a Walk of Witness through their local streets, in remembrance of Jesus' walk with his cross through Jerusalem.

Maundy Thursday commemorates Jesus sharing the Last Supper with his disciples and commanding them to  "Love one another as I have loved you."

The tradition of the Monarch or their representative presenting alms on Maundy Thursday goes back to 1213.

Though The King was unable to attend today, a recorded message from His Majesty was played at the service, describing this year’s recipients as, “wonderful examples of such kindness; of going way beyond the call of duty and of giving so much of their lives to the service of…

It was lovely to see so many out in Worcester today who came to welcome The Queen.

Congratulations to this year’s Maundy Money recipients – thank you for your service.

Chris Bryant openly admitting he & his party manipulated the rules to get what they wanted. Perhaps now some commentators would like to revise their deeply naive & misguided accounts of what occurred last Wednesday & stop blaming @theSNP?

Labour MPs, many of whom I can call friends, and who would cheer me to the rafters when I was being a thorn in the side of my own government, should reflect. How would they feel if the boot was on the other foot?

For the record, it was my intention to vote for the SNP motion on a ceasefire in Gaza. I respect all colleagues who hold different views to me about this serious issue. What mattered was the chance show to our constituents what we thought of the SNP motion. We were denied this.

Plain fact is that Mr Speaker acted in a partisan way to meet the needs of Kier Starmer in managing his party. He changed the rules of the game. That is not the action of an impartial referee. All other considerations are secondary in this matter.

The @HouseofCommons is a ‘citizens assembly’ I suppose. Perhaps it might be a reasonable place for such deliberations, rather than subcontracting out responsibility to unaccountable bodies.

For context, I’ve become increasingly concerned and depressed by the toxicity of the debate around immigration and asylum, which, I’m sorry to say, has been worsened by the Home Secretary.

Her question to @ipsaUK concerned whether a speeding ticket incurred during the course of parliamentary duties could be claimed on expenses. Rather embarrassed, the representatives from @ipsaUK said no.

My clearest recollection of our Home Secretary’s legal acumen came from day one as an MP. We had a presentation from @ipsaUK

This evening, having kept quiet for a while, I was struck by the lamentable hopelessness of the Home Secretary, remembering particularly her first week or so as a Member of Parliament

It is a privilege to be the Member of Parliament for Hazel Grove. I have made the decision not to stand at the next election. I shall continue to represent constituents to the best of my ability in the meantime and thank everyone for their wonderful support over the years.

Thank you for all of your support recently. I’m looking forward to steadily getting back into the swing of things.

Look after yourselves 💚

As a vice chair of the 1922 committee overseeing the election of a new leader of the @Conservatives, I shall not declare who I am supporting. I wish all my colleagues well - it is a hugely brave thing to stand. Let us go forward together 🇬🇧

I am standing again to be a vice-chair of the 1922 Executive and hope colleagues will support me to continue in the role. The situation needs a new confidence vote in the PM, which can come by Tuesday next week. In the meantime he could do the right thing and resign.

If banning conversion therapy will stop the likes of me being subjected to mental cruelty in repressing my true self, why not so for someone who is trans? I can see no logic in excluding trans people from legislation banning conversion therapy. Let’s have some empathy.

Nus is very brave to speak out. I was truly appalled to learn of her experience. She shows such strength and integrity supporting others. I am proud to have her as my friend and colleague. We must change things for the better.

I shall vote against additional restrictions, including mandatory vaccination and covid passports.

However, I entirely encourage people to book a covid vaccine booster.

Encouragement not coercion.

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination/book-coronavirus-vaccination/

Ah, the haranguing you gave me in the tearoom the other day, it all makes sense now, you were rehearsing your lines for cabinet @NadineDorries. Well done 👏

Sir David Amess was a friend to all. I never heard him say a bad word about anyone. He was tremendous fun, could be relied upon to cheer us up and had the best stories going. A dedicated MP who cared deeply for others. What a loss. How we shall all miss him.

Thank you to @sajidjavid for ruling out domestic covid vaccine passports. It was clear many ministers were rightly sceptical of them. The evidence for them was flimsy at best, not to mention an infringement of civil liberties. Glad voices of common sense have prevailed.

I’m thrilled to share that my parliamentary assistant, Dan Horrocks, has received a BEM in the King’s Birthday Honours! 🎉

Congratulations, Dan! You absolutely deserve this honour.

For more about his journey:

Last Wednesday, I had the pleasure of joining The Scouts at their parliamentary celebration for volunteers! ⚜️🏕️ It was great to discover their campaign urging employers to provide 35 hours of volunteer leave for employees.

#TimetoVolunteer

🚫 Labour have lost control of the British economy - It’s clear that today’s spending will be followed by big tax rises for local families and more borrowing that our children will have to repay

If international treaties and conventions stop the democratic will of the British people being exercised, then we must leave them.

Our Lawfare Commission will look at this in detail, and explore all the consequences of leaving conventions like the ECHR.

Volunteers are at the heart of our community 💙 and I continue to be blown away by the amazing work that they do

To our wonderful volunteers across Kingswinford & South Staffordshire - thank you!
#VolunteersWeek

If international treaties are holding us back, making us less safe and less prosperous, then we need to leave them.

But we need a clear plan, and a full understanding of all the consequences.

So our Lawfare Commission will look at 5 key tests🧵👇

Get involved ✅ Schools and youth groups from Kingswinford & South Staffordshire can now register for UK Parliament Week

In a flagrant breach of Parliamentary rules the Govt gave the Defence Review to journalists, in full, before MPs received it - and it now appears defence companies were shown it in advance too. We need a proper enquiry into who authorised, and who received, this briefing

8 months ago, Labour freed criminals early—they popped champagne. One killed a man hours later.

Now Labour wants no jail for sentences under 12 months—and just 22% served for others.

Build more prisons. Deport foreign criminals. Clear court backlogs. Do it now—we’ll back it.

I'm pleased to support @forsteringnet Foster Care Fortnight for families in Kingswinford & South Staffordshire & beyond
This year’s theme is The Power of Relationships - because at the heart of every fostering journey are the family connections that make all the difference

Conservatives have succeeded in getting the sentences of three rape gang members increased after a minuscule prison sentence.

But that still isn’t full justice for the victims.

It was an honour to meet Ramsay, aged 100, and enjoy a memorable conversation at recent VE Day celebrations in Kingswinford 🎈
His lifetime of service—from the Royal Navy in WWII to Station Commander at Brierley Hill Fire Station—is truly inspiring. Thank you, Ramsay 🇬🇧

🚨 Labour U-turn! 🚨

It should not take the threat of legal action to do the right thing for British farmers.

Now 3,000 more farmers can complete their SFI payment applications and not face the Labour imposed cliff edge.

Labour could have avoided this u-turn if they listened.

A very moving #VEDay80 service at St. Benedict's this evening, joined by @WombourneParish Chairman, Cllr @VincentMerrick, @mikejwood MP and Parish colleagues ❤️🕯️

Over 70 colleagues and I have written to @RachelReevesMP to stop any fuel duty hikes with reports of a 7p rise on the way. Over 14 years the Conservatives either cut or froze fuel duty. A rise would hit hardworking families across Britain. Thanks to @HowardCCox for his hard work.

If "policing is an operational matter for the police", as Ellie Reeves claims, then why did the Home Secretary, the Mayor of London, the attorney-general and Sue Gray all lobby the Met to change their minds and give Taylor Swift taxpayer-funded security?

Fantastic to visit @yarletschool in Staffordshire. Unfortunately, schools like Yarlet face an uncertain future due to the removal of the VAT exemption on fees. This vindictive policy will hit smaller independent schools hardest while doing little to improve state education.

Isn’t it ironic that Labour have halted the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act without allowing the issue to be debated in Parliament?

When I raised this with the Minister, she refused to confirm that this measure would be put to a vote.

Thank you to @GavinWilliamson for highlighting concerns from farmers about the impact any changes to inheritance tax and capital gains tax could have on the viability of British farming businesses.

Last Friday, Keir Starmer and Ed Miliband conveniently forgot about their £22 billion black hole and committed £22 billion to a carbon capture scheme. As we are finding out about many Labour pledges, this policy is light on the detail – in particular, how it will be funded. (1)

I am shocked at the Government’s decision to surrender sovereign territory without putting the matter to a meaningful vote in the House of Commons.

I call on Keir Starmer to allow issues of sovereignty to be determined by Parliament – not by ministerial diktat.

The Government say they scrapped the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023 due to the cost of compliance being financially “burdensome” for universities. (1)

I was pleased to attend Blood Cancer UK's Parliamentary reception as we look at ways to improve survival chances.

Over 250,000 people are currently living with blood cancer. We must do all we can to support.

I am delighted that the Home Office has scrapped plans to house asylum seekers in former student accommodation at Beaconside. This is something that I and so many have campaigned for, and it is a great victory which I know many local residents will welcome.

I have called on the Transport Secretary to provide an urgent update in relation to the M54 and M6 link road scheme.

As many of us will know, it can be a nightmare travelling along the A460 owing to congestion. This scheme must move at pace.

Disorder and violence continue to tear through our country. More than 400 people have been arrested, livelihoods have been damaged, and fractures within our society have been laid bare. That’s why it’s time for Keir Starmer to come out of hiding and recall Parliament.

I want to wish everyone participating as Team GB all the very best as the Paris Olympics gets under way today.

In Staffordshire we have a proud Olympic history. I hope our competitors can take inspiration from local Olympians such as Stone's very own Joe Clarke MBE

In the national interest, we will not oppose for the sake of it.

But when we disagree with the Government, it is our responsibility as the Opposition to say so.

My response to the King’s Speech 👇

They have only been in power for a few days, but Labour have already confirmed that they will:

❌ Concrete over the Green Belt
❌ Force government housing targets on communities
❌ Ignore local voices in the planning process

Labour thinks that Whitehall knows better than you.

The inaccuracy in the statement from @Staffordbc is disgusting. We have always appreciated the support that has been given to us but we are asking for a symbolic element of Pride to be shown above the Civic Centre. This shouldn’t be transactional; it should be a given to show… https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1801650590360994161

There's something Labour isn't telling you. They've only declared about 25% of the taxes that they would put up.

It's time they were honest with us.

Immigration is one of the main issues that people are rightly concerned about.

The Labour candidate for Stone, Great Wyrley, and Penkridge has not mentioned immigration in her five pledges. Can you trust Labour to tackle immigration in Staffordshire?

In 2019, we promised to deliver 20,000 more police on our streets. We did.

Now we’ll go even further and deliver 8,000 more police officers to keep our streets safe.

On the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, we remember all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.

Their legacy lives on. Their courage and determination inspires us, and we will always be indebted to them.

The revival of HS2 would be a disaster for Staffordshire.

I am committed to doing everything possible to ensure that HS2 in Staffordshire remains derailed

3 by-elections in NE Derbys tonight - & 3 Con gains!

Congrats to

Cllr Jess Stokes - first ever Con District Cllr for Clay Cross N

Cllr Yvonne Shaw - 2nd ever Con Parish Cllr for Clay Cross

& Cllr Peter Pollard - new Con Parish Cllr for Wingerworth

I am hugely grateful for the opportunity to serve NE Derbyshire for the last seven years. It has been amazing! My congratulations to Louise, the new MP

From me, thank you to everyone across the constituency for their help, support and work

It has been a genuine privilege

NE Derbyshire: it's been an absolute privilege over the last few weeks to talk about our future.

Whatever happens tonight: thank you. It has been the privilege of my life to represent you - and I hope I might be able to do it again.

Now: onto the count!

🌦️ We saw it all yesterday in North East Derbyshire - sun, cloud and finally rain - but it didn’t stop us 🙄

🗞️ A pleasure to be out supporting @Lee4NED in his re-election bid along with @CllrSamuelC_A.

#localgovfamily

We had a wonderful visit from @Lee4NED this morning!

He spoke to the children in assembly before meeting with the @WHPEco Committee to discuss environmental issues.

This is our second of four visits from local parliamentary candidates in the run up to the #generalelection

Thank you to everyone who came to the first North East Derbyshire hustings yesterday evening in Dronfield - great to debate and discuss!

We're doing hustings all over North East Derbyshire in the days ahead - come along and ask your questions

Great to be out yesterday with our fab @Conservatives teams, working away for @Lee4NED!
Great reception on the doorstep for a brilliant, hard working local MP! #LeeRowley
@cwowomen @women2win @CWOEastMids

The most consequential property reform for decades is law

The Leasehold Bill empowers people with more control & freedom. Those on freehold estates gain transparency & redress

Conservatism is best when smashing monopolies & making markets better. Today, we've made huge progress

It is the most amazing privilege to serve North East Derbyshire

And we've made so much progress - town deals, banking hubs, a new A&E and much more

But there's so much more to do. And that's why I'll be asking for your support again on 4th July

Let's keep going together!

“Getting shovels in the ground is crucial” says Angela Rayner

We agree. That’s why we are already getting on with making it happen

And why Labour’s plans are, again, fantasy island

(1/8)

Privilege to take part and acknowledge the service of Operation Grapple veterans yesterday in Chesterfield - thank you to everyone who organised and attended.
