Oh dear.
The Secretary of State for Education, Nadhim Zahawi, has ripped up his own plans and is back to the drawing board with his very first piece of primary legislation.
Once again, Tory chaos is failing our children.
A thread ... ๐Ÿงต

It was great to join @allpartycycling, @RuthCadbury, Trudy Harrison, @Chris_Boardman, @KvanOosterom and many others on the #ParliamentaryBikeRide. ๐Ÿšฒ

It was a fantastic day to be out cycling in London.

@RuthCadbury @LabourSJ @Wheels4Well @IsabelleClement @London_Cycling @CPhilpOfficial @SteveReedMP @lcc Yes, we can help. Cycling lessons of various kinds are available via and @London_Cycling offer a "cycle buddies" service for the inexperienced to team up with someone who knows the ropes and the routes.

UK is a soft touch for illicit money - the Government is severely criticised by Parliamentโ€™s Foreign Affairs Committee

We're still buzzing from marshalling yesterday's #ParliamentaryBikeRide ๐Ÿšฒ ride across London, with our @London_Cycling team helping everyone arrive safely (despite Northumberland Avenue...๐Ÿ˜…)

Shout-out to our member of 30+ years & @allpartycycling co-chair @RuthCadbury MP!

The DfT has launched a specific investigation authority focused on road safety.

The Road Safety Investigation Branch (RSIB) will make independent safety recommendations and shape future road safety policy.

Today I hosted an event in Parliament for Vision Zero- the TFL campaign to end all deaths & serious injuries on London's roads.

We heard from Mandy about her own personal experience after her daughter was killed, along with other speakers. 1/2

UK Government creating Investigation Branch focused on Road Safety.

At the official opening of the Community Pantry at the Bridgelink Centre with Mayor and Deputy Mayor and lots of fellow councillors - a great community initiative which will (sadly) be a lifeline for many of our residents

NEW: Rayner responds to Raab's jibe at her for going to the opera

"My advice to the deputy prime minister is to cut out the snobbery & brush up on his opera. The Marriage of Figaro is the story of a working-class woman who gets the better of a privileged but dim-witted villain."

Those of us in public life should admit our mistakes. That's why I'm apologising to all BA workers for getting it wrong on Sunday.

BA must restore the pay of their loyal workforce - and the gvt must sit down with employers and workers to address chronic low pay in aviation.

A powerful speech from @LabourSJ about the Home Office's failure to fix policing & tackle crime.

The Governments record so far...

โŒA broken promise to introduce a victims bill.

โŒ No new guidance about strip-searches.

โŒ No urgent action to improve police culture.

A damning report about the ongoing failure to make progress in reaching our net zero goals- with the Climate Change Committee warning of โ€˜major policy failuresโ€™ and โ€˜scant evidence of deliveryโ€™โ€™.

We cannot afford more dither & delay from the Government.

It's important that the Home Secretary @pritipatel understands our feelings, as the London PLP, following the news that the Met Police Service have been put into special measures.

Our letter, co-signed by fellow London Labour MPs, with 3 hours notice.

Will no doubt add more.๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿพ

Many of my constituents have had long running concerns over the culture & decisions taken by the senior leadership at the Met.

Todays news shows just how much work is needed to rebuild Londoners trust in the Met. 1/2

And thanks to @RuthCadbury for calling out our referenced article by @JordyR on why opposing safer cycling is bad for candidates at elections

Rape prosecutions are still at near record lows & court backlogs are still at near record highs.

Three years on from recognising their failure, the Tories havenโ€™t done nearly enough.

Labourโ€™s plan would drive up prosecutions & restore victimsโ€™ confidence in our justice system.

The UK Government has a chance to stand up for human rights in the Gulf- whether that's the rights of women, the rights of migrant workers or the rights of trade unionists.

However yet again Boris Johnson is taking an 'any deal will do' approach.

A welcome change- although it is one we've had to wait far too long to happen.

I campaigned for the law to be changed back in 2018 after working with a coalition of road safety groups & victims who had seen how inadequate our existing laws were.

DIT Ministers like to talk a lot about the new non binding memorandums they've signed with individual states.

Last week I tabled a question asking about the impact they would have on our GDP.

DIT said it's not possible to answer within the usual timeframe ๐Ÿง

The UK should be standing up for workers rights across the world.

Yet both existing trade deals such as those with Colombia & future deals such as those with the Gulf show that this Government is ignoring workers rights. 1/2

Instead of trying to resolve the rail dispute the Tories are using it as another excuse to attack trade unions my piece for @LabourList

I've had lots of constituents contact me who are facing long waits for their passport- with some having applied back in April.

This long backlog is causing serious problems for many constituents who are unable to travel for work, or to see ill-relatives.

At the great #OSGWard venue that is @wycombehousecc for a follow up meet with residents, @OsterleyNW, @MPSOsterley, @siddiquiaftab and @RuthCadbury on progress following a recent local arson, #ASB and #CCTV procurement. Positive and sensible discussion for ways forward.

Theyโ€™re cancelling art & humanities degrees at uni where students arenโ€™t in skilled jobs in 6 months. They would have cancelled my drama degree at Hull on that basis. I wouldnโ€™t have become a writer. I wouldnโ€™t have written #Sherwood. Other writers wouldnโ€™t have written theirs.

Mary Peace @maryvpeace

English lit degree at Sheffield Hallam is being โ€œsuspended.โ€ University responding to Government who will no longer fund degrees where 60% students donโ€™t end up in โ€œhighly skilledโ€ jobs within 6 months.

Chilling, heartbreaking news from Oslo.

My prayers are with the victims and their families.

This is why Pride matters. Oslo Pride may not be happening today, but they will march again because hate will not win.

Brentford Canal Festival today till 6pm with lots of music, dance, paddleboarding, food and more organised by @BrentfordVoice with help of many volunteers

A chilling & devastating ruling that will remove abortion access for millions of Americans.

I was proud as an MP to vote to expand reproductive rights in Northern Ireland- yet now we're seeing the clock go backwards in the US.

Help shape Londonโ€™s Fire Service 7year plan - public consultation today till 6pm at Heston Fire Station (London Road,Isleworth) โฆ@HounslowFireโฉ

The Conservatives are refusing to give Londoners & TFL a fair, long term financial deal.

This refusal to support Londoners will have a huge impact on our transport network.

The Government need to work with @SadiqKhan & give London a fair deal. 1/2

This is welcome news- especially for the family & friends of the victims.

I know so many Londoners, especially in the LGBT community, were shocked about this case & the failures of the Met Police when investigating these murders.

This Conservative Governmentโ€™s Bill of Rights con is an attack on women.

It will make it harder for victims of rape to get justice.

But it comes as no surprise from a Govt that has effectively decriminalised rape.

With the UK starting negotiations for a trade deal with the Gulf States serious issues remain.

Ministers need to ensure any FTA protects the rights of women, migrant workers & also has clear action to tackle the climate crisis.
