This week treasury minister agrees to my request to meet to reduce red tape for alcohol exports, a vital UK industry, whilst protecting revenue.
Government performance lamentable
These are deeply worrying statistics, showing that when the UK Govmt fails to deliver on trade promises, it’s businesses and workers that suffer.
Ministers need an urgent, practical plan to drive up exports, not just warm words & press releases. https://on.ft.com/3nxWEoY
And now UK Tories are rolling back devolution with plans to scrap agency ban in Wales.
And this is why removing the ban on agency workers is such a grossly irresponsible policy. @UKLabour shadow employment minister @justinmadders sets out the evidence on how it endangers public safety https://labourlist.org/2022/06/breaking-strikes-using-agency-workers-is-recklessly-gambling-with-public-safety/
Always a proud moment for a writer as the cover of my new book “Harold Wilson: The Winner” is unveiled.
Looking forward to release on 1 Sept.
Here’s me with @IainDale on Wilson’s amazing life-from a modest background to youngest Cabinet Minister & PM.

Honoured to participate in the #ArmedForcesDay2022 events in #Llanelli earlier today including the parade through town, the Falklands 40 Drumhead Service and the unveiling of a special Falklands Memorial Bench in the Town Hall grounds.
The cost of living crisis is being made worse by @BorisJohnson ‘s poor trade deal with the EU new research from @resfoundation finds today with workers on av £470 a year worse off & long term damage to Britain’s openness and competitiveness https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/jun/22/brexit-is-making-cost-of-living-crisis-worse-new-study-claims?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other
Good response on the doorstep for @UKLabour candidate @simonlightwood in #Wakefield by-election
It's Armed Forces week & I called on the Tory Government to rethink their further cuts to the army, after already cutting it by a third, just when Head of the Army stresses we need to be “ready to fight and win wars on land” Stunningly complacent set-piece answers from Minister
Today is #GlobalMNDAwarenessDay when we remember the devastating effects of motor neurone disease around the world.
And, as an MP I will work to support people living with and affected by #MND and champion @mndcampaigns in Parliament
After the Government's shocking sell-out on climate change commitments in the Australia trade deal, I call on the Minister to incentivise India on meeting climate targets through the planned deal with India.
NOT one Tory MP joined us in calling for a ban on Fire and Rehire, now ever more widespread, & the Minister's response was pathetic. Labour would go further, giving workers security from Day 1 as insecurity causes stress, damages productivity & ultimately costs the public purse.
UK Government so short -sighted to be slashing British Council staff just at a time when, more than ever we need to be improving international relations and increasing UK exports.
.@UKLabour backs UK steel, whilst the Tories are dragging their feet in renewing vital protections for the industry.
Jobs and investment in communities across the UK are at risk.
Ministers must act.

Very sorry to hear that the legendary Phil Bennett has passed away at the young age of 73. Great loss to Llanelli and Wales. Deepest condolences to the family.

Packed meeting in Tycroes sending clear signal about keeping doctors’ surgery in Tycroes.
And they’re off
Exciting atmosphere in #Pembrey Country Park just before start of Day 5 of Women’s 2022 Cycle Tour of Britain as riders prepare including yesterday’s leader in the yellow jersey Grace Brown of Australia
Stark reminder at parliamentary event this week of huge strain on carers and just how much they save the taxpayer. High time to improve support.
The choice is clearer than ever before:
Divided Tories propping up Boris Johnson with no plan to tackle the issues you are facing.
Or a united Labour Party with a plan to fix the cost of living crisis and restore trust in politics.
Labour will get Britain back on track.
Now isn’t the time for a blame game about the workings of the Protocol.
Tory Party chaos should not be preventing Ministers from getting around the table and carrying out the work necessary to find a solution & the EU should engage in a pragmatic spirit.

Thank you #Llanelli Veterans Association, Meibion Elli & Llanelli Town Council for adding dignity and joy to the Beacon Lighting ceremony on the Millennium Coastal Path to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.
Thank you #Llanelli Veterans Association, Meibion Elli & Llanelli Town Council for adding dignity and joy to the Beacon Lighting ceremony on the Millennium Coastal Path to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.
Many thanks for the messages of congratulation, & thank you to all of you that I have been privileged to work with over the years, because my efforts are only one small part, and it has been together with many remarkable individuals, that we have been able to achieve results.
Charges down, response times up & victims left despairing; BBC investigation shows action on crime getting worse.
With 7000 fewer neighbourhood police, crime rising, more criminals let off & more victims let down, this Govt is badly failing on law & order https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-61592910
Ministers should also be honest with exporters - and the British public- that state-level deals are no substitute for the completed US-UK trade deal they were promised by the end of 2022 in the last Conservative manifesto.

Privileged to be @GWRHelp ‘s naming of #Trainbow after Alan Turing, with his name unveiled by 2 of his nieces, & speeches by #Bletchley historians & @Dylan4Compton #Plymouth’s first trans councillor. Good to see GWR highlighting diversity & inclusion.
In spite of my repeated calls, we still have no commitment from Tory UK Government to electrify the railway through to West Wales, which would help reduce emissions and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels. They just don't seem to want to invest in our future.
.@NiaGriffithMP asks about the electrification on rail lines from Swansea and through her constituency, and into West Wales. Sec of State avoids an actual answer...
More proof of @BorisJohnson & @annietrev ‘s underwhelming record on trade. We lag behind the rest of the G7 & EU for growth in our exports and now this; @AngelaRayner attacks ‘obscene’ waste of funds on little-used export helpline https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/may/23/labour-attacks-obscene-waste-of-funds-on-little-used-export-helpline?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other
Tory MPs could have stepped up to tackle the cost of living crisis.
Instead they left families, businesses and pensioners to suffer.
Labour’s plan to lower your energy bills includes a windfall tax on oil and gas producer profits.
Tory Government still dithering while people are really scared by energy bills, so again I repeated our call for a windfall tax on @TimesRadio this evening in order to help people with energy bills
Energy companies are calling on the Government to do more, but the Tories are still refusing to help.
Only Labour has a funded plan to help tackle the Conservatives' cost of living crisis.
Tory Government totally incompetent ... they have had ages to sort this out.
That a Disaster Relief Charity has been called in to deal with the lorry port queues shows the scale of the crisis this Tory Government has created.
It’s high time that Ministers started focussing on pragmatic solutions.

A pleasure to meet the Congressional @WaysMeansCmte delegation led by @RepRichardNeal with @Keir_Starmer & @AnnelieseDodds, to discuss protecting the Good Friday Agreement, ambitious UK-US trade dialogue & the importance of Western unity in the face of Putin’s aggression.
A positive campaign by @AustralianLabor ends almost a decade of stale Conservative rule.
You showed that Australia deserves better.
Huge congratulations to @AlboMP and our sister party Australian Labor!

Hey Vegan pies from #Ferryside and Grey Alders 90% beef beef burgers just two of the delights you can buy at #Llanelli food festival today
Calling on the Government to do more to help hard-pressed families, and to stimulate growth in the economy.
Yesterday I voted for an emergency budget to tackle the Tory cost of living crisis, but Tory Government just does not care that people cannot afford basics.
A useful discussion which underlined how many jobs financial services support across the U.K. & the importance of championing services exports to generate more decent jobs & routes out of the cost of living crisis https://twitter.com/TheCityUK/status/1526908046735204353
We were delighted to host @UKLabour Shadow International Trade team today to discuss financial and professional services #trade. A great discussion on how we integrate services into future FTAs, secure the best international talent, and support global economic development.
Very positive response on the doorstep in #Wakefield North to our excellent @UKLabour candidate @simonlightwood
Look forward to campaigning with you tomorrow
Congratulations to Simon Lightwood our fantastic candidate for the Wakefield by-election.
The Tories have let Wakefield down and left local people without a voice.
Simon will deliver a fresh start for Wakefield and be a strong champion for our community.

Good to welcome Richard Whiting, Community Rail Officer, Heart of Wales line to #Llanelli Railway Goods Shed to discuss opportunities to work together. @howlta1
In our parliamentary debate on fairness at work, I explained how our @WelshLabour Government is implementing our manifesto pledge to ensure all paid carers in Wales receive at least the Real Living Wage, currently set at £9.90 an hour
Honoured to speak @SeneddWales at the unveiling of the bust of my distinguished predecessor Jim Griffiths MP who did so much to create the modern welfare state and pave the way for devolution. @PrifWeinidog @Amanwy
Many thanks to Hospital Notes Choir, the team at Bro Lliedi, @AidanColeman @RevDavidjones & all who helped put together a thanksgiving service and lunch to remember all the hard work key workers did in the pandemic.
Time to get rid of Plaid from ‘running’ Carmarthenshire, and restore decent street cleaning schedules. Vote @WelshLabour on 5 May.
Lovely to see @JoStevensLabour in Tycroes today, thanks for the help in re-electing Tina for Tycroes!
Great to meet @betterbizact campaigners in Parliament who echo Welsh Government’s incentivising business to support workers’ rights, mental well-being & reduce carbon footprint. #BetterBusinessAct
I welcome recent announcements of dedicated Police teams for Wembley & Uxbridge but it is shocking to see that Harrow Town Centre has missed out on a team.
If you believe the same, sign my petition calling on the Met Police for an urgent reconsideration: https://www.gareththomas.org.uk/town-centre-police-team-campaign/
