Access to fair & affordable credit is more important than ever, especially with the squeeze on living costs.

Yesterday I asked the Treasury to look at reforms to the Credit Union Act that will strengthen credit unions, widening access, & preventing people turning to loan sharks.

🧠 This week I write about neurology and Parkinson’s, covering everything from: questions to the FCDO; meeting the Health Secretary, and visiting the Parkinson’s Furness Support Group.

This morning I dropped in on Alan and his amazing team of volunteers at the Parkinson’s Furness Support Group.

The group offers support, therapy and treatments.

This morning I laid a wreath in Ulverston as a mark of thanks from the people of Barrow & Furness to those in the Armed Forces, and to our veterans, for their steadfast service to our country.

My sincere thanks to them.

#ArmedForcesDay

A massive thanks to Mark for showing me the ropes at the sorting office in Barrow and then taking me out on a delivery route.

The team there worked tirelessly through the pandemic, delivering mountains of parcels daily and do much the same day in, day out. My thanks to them!

It was lovely to meet the Breast Cancer Now team last week.

We need to raise the ambition for breast cancer diagnosis - doing so will save lives.

If you have questions about breast cancer, or want to talk things through, call their helpline on 0808 800 6000.

Last week I met @KwasiKwarteng & @GregHands to raise concerns that motorists in Furness are not seeing fair prices at the pump.

Following that meeting, I have written to the CMA, asking them to examine local pricing to make sure that there is no profit gouging in Furness.

🆙 This week I write about remembering the Falklands, celebrating the skills in the shipyard, and fighting for the North at the inaugural #NorthernResearchGroup conference.

A few people have contacted me about rumours of a planned closure of Ulverston ticket office.

I’ve been on to Northern and can confirm that this is NOT happening. Removing staff would mean the station being inaccessible for those with mobility issues - so it is not on the table.

It was an honour to present the Furness Coastguard team with The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal earlier.

As part of Her Majesty’s Coastguard, they are on duty 24/7. Yet they are volunteers, sacrificing holidays and family time to step up. On behalf of the community - thank you!

This summer, @Asda is celebrating 10 years of its Community Champion and Green Token Giving schemes. From their local store, they have supported many organisations in our area and they will continue to do so going forward. Find out more here: https://tinyurl.com/56mzk96v

It was great to drop in on @CommonsSpeaker earlier to present him with a gift from @CumbriaCrystal.

Cumbria Crystal supply embassies, James Bond, and Downton, flying the flag for Furness around the world.

I hope that they will soon also be supplying the House of Commons shop!

Many congratulations to the team at Ulverston-based @OxleyDev on the brilliant news today that they’ve won the contract to deliver the lighting on the British Army’s new Boxer vehicles.

The team should be rightly proud of being selected to deliver this contract.

It’s a 10 from Len for our #PensionCredit day of action

Yesterday I asked @BWallaceMP for an update on the Dreadnought programme and to join me in thanking those working on this critical national endeavour.

The Defence Secretary did not hold back in his words: “What they do in Barrow… is breathtaking and a huge achievement.”

Fuel prices⛽️

I’ve asked the @CMAgovUK to conduct an urgent review of the retail fuel market, as well as a longer-term investigation under the Enterprise Act.

Fuel prices are always quick to go up but slow to come down - let’s see why.

Yesterday I popped in to the Hindpool Community Centre to meet with Craig Backhouse from Furness Carers and other organisations as part of #CarersWeek.

The work that voluntary carers do is amazing & is often overlooked, so during #CarersWeek, I wanted to say thank you to them.

It was lovely to stop by St Columba’s this afternoon to speak to pupils and present Orla with a small gift to say thank you for her excellent card to The Queen.

Many thanks to everyone who chatted to me and my team, and to Mrs O’Donnell for her time and a good cup of tea!

I enjoyed joining the Young Entrepreneurs event at the Derby last night to listen to their stories, answer some questions, and discuss how we can work together with the new W&F Council to support our high street, local businesses, improve tourism.

Thanks so much for having me!

Providing opportunities for women in STEM is essential.

Today in Parliament I praised @BAES_Maritime & @OxleyDev for their hard work in doing just this.

I'm grateful to Minister @michelledonelan for accepting my invite to B&F to see why this initiative is working so well.

🚢 A really interesting day with @CommonsHomeAffs:

🚚 first, meeting with officials from the Port of Dover to examine cross-border trade & security;

👮‍♂️ & learning from the Clandestine Channel Threat Command about work on border security, small boat crossings, & asylum policy.

🗳 Vote of confidence in the PM 🗳

This has been a tough day.

I’m sure the result was closer than the PM would have liked but the fact is that he won & has a mandate to continue.

The focus now must be delivery: on levelling up, cost of living, & Ukraine to name just three.

It was good to meet Michael & Luke who have taken over management of the buildings at Steamer and Schooner Street.

These homes are part of Barrow’s heritage but there’s much work to be done to restore them. We discussed their plans to do so, and to keep the area safe and clean.

🤝 It was lovely to meet Connor Ferguson & Ian Reid just outside Broughton earlier.

🚶 Connor & Ian are walking an incredible 600 miles across the UK & Ireland to raise funds for Beyond the Battlefield, hoping to raise over £20,000 for veterans.

I’ve heard people’s concerns about the impact of the Energy Bills Support Scheme repayments on future bills.

So those repayments will be cancelled.

Furthermore, the £200 of support for household energy bills will be doubled to £400 for everyone.

Disabled people face extra costs in their lives like having energy-intensive equipment around the home or workplace.

So, to help the 6 million people who receive non-means tested disability benefits, we will provide an extra one-off disability cost of living payment worth £150.

From the autumn, we will send over eight million pensioner households who receive the Winter Fuel Payment – an extra, one-off pensioner cost of living payment of £300.
