I know the importance of the US/UK security relationship. A partnership that saves American lives everyday. UK is, in some respects, the junior partner, but there are skills & capabilities where the USA looks to UK for expertise.
Security is too important for clickbait politics
UK Ambassador to USA needs security, trade, politics & diplomatic experience - and a hotline to PM. Lord Mandelson meets all these tests. He also understands the folly to the UK national interest of those advocating for the ‘false choice’ of choosing either the USA or EU on trade

Foreign policy: Trump should not be taken literally - but he should be taken seriously. The USA’s adversaries (shared with UK) now sleep less easy in their beds. That includes Putin. The next Senate majority Leader (Wed vote) & GOP House leadership will help determine outcomes…

Trump advisers need to read history. The war in Ukraine is about freedom & values not just territory. If the USA allows Putin to succeed in 🇺🇦 his expansionism will continue. Aided by North Korea, Iran & China. It could cost the USA a lot more in blood & treasure in the long run

Whether NATO capitals like it or not, the war in Ukraine is as much about a battle of values as it is a battle for Ukrainian sovereign territory. A defeat for Ukraine, whatever defeat looks like, would be a defeat for NATO, including the USA. NATO must redouble its support for 🇺🇦
Dmitry Medvedev was a puppet President of Russia. He is no longer President - but remains a puppet. Today he slurs out threatening lines of nuclear obliteration of the UK & NATO allies. Is this the same Russia that can’t even protect its own Black Sea Fleet from $5k sea drones?
Navalny’s death is a sign of Putin’s ‘weakness’. Hundreds of political prisoners remain in custody following sham trials overseen by puppet judges. These prisoners include British citizen Vladimir Kara-Murza. VKM is a true hero. Putin hides behind body doubles. Putin is a coward.

There is no realistic or credible threat to Rishi Sunak’s premiership. As a fmr Secretary of the 1922 Cttee (under Cameron) there are always letters of ‘no confidence’ being submitted by a small number of MPs when polling gets bumpy. Nothing new. PM will lead Tories into next GE
There’s still a pathway to a Tory victory at next GE. Inflation & interest rates will fall in 2024, a deterrence for illegal migration is imminent & a tax cutting budget is coming soon. Labour has no plan. Keir Starmer is no Tony Blair. Rishi can still lead Tories to GE victory

Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. EU/UK/US cannot sleep walk into infinite regret. A nuclear Iran would be a geo-political & defence rubicon that would permanently & catastrophically alter existing world order & global national security. Hard choices are coming
