Today is 25 years since the handover of Hong Kong to China.

Beijing has abandoned its legally binding commitment to uphold Hong Kong’s rights and freedoms. The UK will continue to hold China to account for its actions.

Carbon capture tech could help create 50,000 British jobs this decade.

Today I met 20 companies to discuss how we can get money into the UK to kick-start this nascent industry.

The opportunities are huge - jobs, growth, industrial competitiveness and tech exports 🇬🇧

I’m grateful to 🇬🇧 Prime Minister @BorisJohnson for allocating an additional £1 billion for security assistance to Ukraine. 🇬🇧 is our true friend and strategic partner. We appreciate the consistent, leadership support for 🇺🇦 in countering Russian aggression.

Over the coming years, the UK will require a steady supply of critical minerals for a wide range of tech.

To protect our national security, it is vital we develop domestic supply chains and partner with like-minded allies.

Our upcoming Critical Minerals Strategy will say more.

Nus Ghani MP @Nus_Ghani

At @CommonsBEIS today, I asked @KwasiKwarteng about the government’s plans for accessing critical minerals 👇🏽

🔴 Business Secretary expected to allude to the potential for electronic ballots to be manipulated by ‘ill-intentioned’ states

Russia has been cutting off gas supply to parts of Europe.

Britain gets very little gas from Russia - and even those imports are down 75% since last year.

But we need to be prepared for any knock-on effects. Here are the steps I’m taking to bolster winter security of supply 👇🏾

If you’re born a male, and go through puberty as male, your body develops natural physical advantages over a woman’s. That makes you stronger and faster.
‘I’m setting a very clear line, competitive women’s sport must be reserved for people born female.

The RMT's unwarranted strikes haven't caused the mass overcrowding on buses or heavy congestion on our roads some feared.

But the Union is damaging the lives of everyday hardworking people that they claim to represent.

They should call off Saturday's strike now.

Sad to see @OliverDowden one of our Party Co-Chairmen stand down.

As the PM says, he understands his disappointment in the by-election losses.

They don’t tell you much about how GE’s pan out. We lost 15 by-elections between 1979 & 1992 but went on to win in 1983, 1987 & 1992.

This day in 2016 saw the greatest show of democracy in British history, with 17.4 million voting to leave the EU & take back control of our borders, laws & trade. We've ended free movement, introduced a points-based system & we will continue to deliver for the British people. 🇬🇧

With war in Europe, energy has become an issue of national security.

In this morning's Chatham House speech, I set out my plans to boost energy security this winter, and our longer-term plan to generate more cleaner, cheaper power at home 🇬🇧

Today, I will table legislation that will give employers the freedom to recruit skilled, temporary staff to plug vital roles during strike action.

This new law will help protect the British public from future disruption caused by militant trade unions👇🏿

Delighted to welcome Saudi Arabia's Minister of Industry @BAlkhorayef to London today 🇬🇧🇸🇦

Saudi's recent £1bn investment on #Teesside shows the strength of our partnership.

We discussed strengthening critical minerals supply chains and boosting investment.

When the pandemic struck, we acted quickly and decisively to protect jobs and businesses. Today, a new report shows equity investment in UK SMEs at an all-time high. We’re going to keep backing businesses in the time ahead

Another boost for new nuclear, with @RollsRoyce Small Modular Reactors announcing new HQ in #Manchester.

They're on track to create 850 jobs this year.

Backed by £210m government funding, they're helping us turbocharge plans for more clean, affordable, homegrown energy 🇬🇧💪

@4dv3rs3c4mb3r The taxpayer supported the railways with £16billion during the pandemic - and not a single job lost. The railways are still in a precarious state and the recovery is fragile. Strike action = lower revenue = job losses.

The rail unions need to talk, not strike. But we will continue to prepare. I'm asking the @MayorofLondon to do his bit to keep London open and moving by waiving the Congestion Charge & ULEZ and pausing non-essential roadworks on rail strike days - simple moves that will go far.

So there is a lot of rubbish being spouted about the PM’s trip to Ukriane. 1. Firstly these trips are organised in total secrecy. Very few, and i mean very few, people know the dates and arrangements. Russia is still launching missile strikes right across Ukriane . 1/5

I enjoyed speaking to the ⁦@PressJournal in Aberdeen on oil & gas and renewables prospects in the North Sea and North East Scotland.

“Energy Minister upbeat on North Sea prospects.”

Steps to shore up energy security this week:

✅ Keeping the 2GW West Burton coal plant open this winter, if needed

✅ Latest data: 10GW of renewable power currently being built; 12GW extra on its way

✅ Major deal with Norway for 1billion cubic meters of gas for the UK

Vulnerable patients will miss appointments.

Doctors and nurses won’t be able to get to work.

It’s time @wesstreeting put patients first, stands up for the NHS and condemns the unjustified rail strikes.

Good meeting with Brendan Bechtel, CEO of @Bechtel - one of the partners working to develop Wylfa nuclear plant on Anglesey🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

We have a £120m Nuclear Fund to bring projects to maturity, then we'll start negotiations with credible sites.

New nuclear is long-term, but necessary.

Britain’s Centrica has signed a major deal with Norway’s Equinor, boosting UK supply for the next 3 winters.

With ongoing uncertainty in Europe, securing extra supply is welcome as we maximise gas production in British waters and accelerate nuclear and renewables.

Clean power pipeline🇬🇧

10GW of renewable power is under construction right now - that's around 3x big nuclear plants

We're procuring 12GW right now through an auction, enabling projects with planning approval

Through our Energy Bill, we'll cut red tape to unlock more projects

Protecting national security is our top priority.

As a condition for financial support through the new Nuclear Act, the Government reserves the right take a 'special share' in all future nuclear projects.

We're set to approve 8 reactors this decade - we must have peace of mind.

NEW - final agreement reached for £130m subsea cable factory near #Blyth, creating 170+ jobs. Construction starts soon

Offshore wind is a major success story. Our investment in @ConnectwithJDR shows how local workers and the supply chain can benefit 🇬🇧

We're backing domestic steel production🇬🇧

Yesterday I visited @CELSASteelUK in Cardiff where they make steel products from scrap metal.

Our steel industry supports thousands of jobs. Through energy relief and tech investment, we're backing the sector to boost competitiveness.

In May, I asked National Grid to explore keeping 3 coal power stations open this winter, if needed.

With uncertainty in Europe following the invasion, it's right we explore all options to bolster supply.

I'm pleased EDF has today confirmed West Burton will remain online.

40 years ago today, the Falkland Islands were liberated by British Forces, with the Union Flag hoisted above Port Stanley once more.

To this day, the UK Government unequivocally supports the Islanders’ right to freedom, sovereignty and self-determination.

Another important meeting of the UK Steel Council yesterday in Wales - home to Tata, Liberty Steel and Celsa 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧

We are securing a competitive future for British industry, having recently extended energy bills relief for a further 3 years - and more than doubling the budget.

New - today we've moved one step closer to securing finance for Britain's new fleet of nuclear plants 🇬🇧

1⃣ set out plans for Sizewell C to receive support through our new financing model

2⃣ consulting on key regulations to kick-start other projects

Just Introduced: This Bill is a reasonable and practical solution to

➡️ Uphold the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement
