On ECHR, I used to be concerned that the only major European nation outside was Russia. But as Shadow Defence Secretary it’s become clear to me that the ECHR hampers our ability to meet the threat from that very same nation - especially if it reopens lawfare against our veterans.
📝 "The ECHR is making it harder for us to defend ourselves against the growing threats we face," says @jcartlidgemp

A wonderful read - been working through for several weeks now, but particularly poignant today, 81 years on.
If treaties get in the way, we will leave them.

D-day, 81 years ago today, surely the greatest collective effort to defeat tyranny in modern history. We remember the sacrifice & we must never forget the lesson - to always be prepared to defend freedom & democracy.
Today marks 81 years since #DDay, the largest seaborne invasion in history. D-Day was a truly international effort with British troops fighting alongside many other countries. Join us today as we remember the service & sacrifice of all those involved in turning the tide of #WW2.

Great to visit Power Plastics on Teesside and talk with local defence SMEs, alongside @MakeUK_ Defence & @LordJohnson_.
The Government must deliver on the SDR’s promise to back British defence SMEs.
Exc: Tories Allege Healey Broke Ministerial Code Three Times With Secret Defence Review Briefings https://order-order.com/2025/06/05/excl-tories-allege-healey-broke-ministerial-code-three-times-with-secret-defence-review-briefings
The world is more dangerous, not less. Deterrence isn’t cheap - delay costs more.
General Barrons is right: spend 2.5% now, not in 2027. Hit 3% by 2029, not 2035.
Deterrence delayed is danger invited. Government must act.

Enjoyed my first appearance on @BBCWorldatOne this lunchtime, explaining that the reason the SDR has unravelled so completely is because Labour have no credible plan to pay for it.
The SDR promised 'up to' 12 attack submarines. As the Government have no credible plan to get to 3% GDP, that promise is just a fantasy fleet with fantasy funding. #PoliticsLive

Labour’s central SDR promise of 12 new attack subs brilliantly taken apart by @NickFerrariLBC.
As I said, a fantasy fleet with fantasy funding.
-How many submarines are we getting?
-How much do they cost?
@NickFerrariLBC wants some straight answers from the Defence Secretary John Healey. Can he get them?

SDR unravelling gets worse - Labour’s biggest headline-grabber was their promise of ‘12 new attack submarines’. On @NickFerrariLBC just now John Healey couldn't confirm how many they will actually build, nor estimate what each will cost.
A fantasy fleet, with fantasy funding.
For all the hype about today's SDR, there's one major thing missing - a plan to pay for it.
Keir Starmer has found billions to pay for his surrender of the Chagos Islands.
Is that why he's not able to commit to properly funding our Armed Forces?
🪖 We must spend more on defence. We can’t afford a bigger welfare state.
Labour & Reform are locked in a bidding war to expand benefits, while the world gets more dangerous by the day.
🔵 @jcartlidgemp lays it out on @SkyNews 👇
Great to be out doing the media round on what should be a big day for Defence - but with the PM unable to even confirm a date for hitting 3% the SDR really is unravelling.
SDR day & the big question - with Labour’s position on 3% defence spending unravelling, how can they deliver what they’ve promised?
Is hitting 3% of GDP on defence government policy?
Defence Secretary John Healey to Saturday's Times "In the next Parliament this county will spend 3% of our GDP on defence". He added he had "no doubt" this would happen in the next Pt.
Gvt source 8am Sat: "‘He was expressing…
John Healey backtracks this morning on 3 per cent pledge, telling broadcasters it is only still an "ambition" after telling The Times on Thursday it was a certainty: "In the next parliament this country will spend 3 per cent of our gdp on defence". The Times clarified a further…
No matter when Labour actually deliver their Strategic Defence Review, they’ve broken their promise to publish it ‘in the Spring’.
How many times did Labour Ministers make this broken promise on the floor of the House?👇
PM in Feb: ‘We will also set a clear ambition for Defence spending to rise to 3% of GDP in the next Parliament’. Healey today confirms that this is by the END of the next Parliament, 9 years away. We need 3% this Parliament, given the threats we face.
Today @pritipatel & I have written to the PM - he must reconsider surrendering the Chagos Islands.
Every time Labour negotiates, the UK loses.
Delighted that the Government has concluded the buy back of the Defence estate from Annington – especially as I was the Minister who did the work to make it possible. Here’s a thread on why it matters so much👇
Great to watch the team in action on the early morning shift at Sudbury Delivery Office. A real team effort to make sure we all get our Christmas cards on time. Remember the deadline for sending 2nd class cards is Wednesday 18th December for delivery in time for Christmas🎅🏼📮

@sophiealichurch speaks to shadow defence secretary @jcartlidgemp on why the UK risks falling behind in the race to rearm
Those serving in our armed forces have confirmed - the MoD’s uprating of CEA to cover the impact of Labour’s Education Tax falls well short in many cases, harming retention just as the threats we face are growing:
Pleased to welcome further investment into our local NHS with the recent opening of the brand new @EastEnglandAmb Hub in Bury St Edmunds which I visited today. The hub will add vital resilience to our region’s ambulance service.
Out early urging Chancellor to change course fast after second consecutive month of GDP contraction. Labour’s talking down of the economy, hiking of taxes and loading up on red tape is killing growth. We are all paying the price.
Honoured to contribute to today’s important debate on LGBT veterans. So many moving stories from MPs, but we’re now seeing real progress following the Etherton Review we initiated, & which the Government are continuing to implement. @fightingwpride
The PM has time to respond to my jokes about lunch…but no time for the farmers who produce our food.
He refused to answer questions because he doesn’t care. It’s an ideological attack on farmers and will destroy lives.
The Conservatives will reverse his cruel Family Farm Tax.
It was such a pleasure & a privilege to meet Ed Hall, Chair of @fightingwpride ahead of today’s debate on Lord Etherton’s independent review into the treatment of LGBT veterans.
The Conservative Party is under new leadership and I am changing our approach to immigration.
Keir Starmer on the other hand, wants to rewrite history on his immigration record. I won’t let him. He has consistently backed foreign criminals over law-abiding British people.
If…
Delighted to attend @TheCMHG last night to discuss their support for @CombatStress.
Big vote in Parliament today on the Family Farm Tax. I'll be voting against. #FamilyFarmTax @NFUtweets
On Labour’s Chagos deal, the new Mauritius Government are reviewing it; the incoming US administration has expressed alarm. Surely as a minimum the Government should pause ratification?
Today Labour are announcing a Defence Industrial Strategy whilst delaying their 2.5% timetable once again, from March to June. With every day that 2.5% is delayed, Labour undermines the ability of our armed forces to rearm at the pace & scale they need to meet today’s threats.
Keir Starmer is having to relaunch (yet again!) because Labour had no plan for government.
His first 6 months will be remembered for freebie scandals, a calamitous budget, surrendering British territory, and now a cabinet minister resigning over fraud and lies.
This is just…
Whilst Parliament is debating Assisted Dying, it reminds me of how important it was to discuss this at my public meeting in Sudbury. I am grateful to everyone who attended & partly because of one of the case studies that evening, I will be voting in favour of the Bill today.

I enjoyed meeting with Bundestag CDU/CSU Foreign Affairs Spokesperson @juergenhardt and 🇩🇪 Ambassador @MiguelBergerAA in Parliament yesterday. UK-German relations remain crucial, both in developing joint military capabilities and supporting Ukraine. 🇬🇧🇩🇪
Very much enjoyed the opportunity to meet Ukrainian Ambassador to the UK, General Valerii Zaluzhnyi with Shadow Ministerial colleague Mark Francois MP. Our support for Ukraine is unwavering 🇺🇦 🇬🇧

Great to visit the new Elective Orthopaedic Centre in Colchester.
This new centre is the largest of its kind in Europe - with 8 theatres, 3 wards and 72 beds - allowing for 10,000 operations each year and reducing waiting times for elective surgery such as hip replacements.
