What has Colum Eastwood been up to today?
Colum Eastwood is MP for Foyle and a member of the Social Democratic and Labour Party party.
Colum Eastwood has 47575 followers on Twitter.
When I first met @columeastwood , he was a young MLA and I was a young BMA rep lobbying on a difficult subject. He was prepared, listened and understood.
I came away thinking ‘that’s a proper politician’, and my view has never changed.
I would like to wish @columeastwood well as he announces his resignation as leader of the SDLP.
Colum has served with distinction and has been a progressive, responsible and pragmatic voice on all issues, but especially the challenging
ones.
My full statement:
Politics is always about the next challenge. The next challenge for me is building a new Ireland that we can all share together.
It’s an honour to be Derry’s MP - a job I love, to have led the SDLP and I’m excited about what comes next.
We have a crisis in public service funding and instead of dealing with it, Executive Departments are starting fights over who sends letters to who?
This is embarrassing, it looks so petty and we don’t have time for it. Ministers need to get a grip and get to work.
Nigel Farage has tightened his grip on Reform UK with the departure of the party’s long-serving chief executive ⬇️
Very sorry to hear about the death of Nell McCafferty. A mould breaker and establishment shaker, she spoke truth to power like only a Derry woman could.
An icon for so many people across Ireland. Nell will be sadly missed but her activism will endure.
Watching Gerry Anderson’s ‘A City Dreaming’ again tonight. God, what a stunning piece of work by a real treasure. His absence is still felt in Derry.
This is sick but not surprising

Doug and I have different politics but I’ve always admired his candour and commitment to working together in the interests of the people we represent.
I know this won’t be the end of his political contribution but hope he enjoys some more time to spend with his loving family.
A beautiful and insightful piece about Derry from @nphegarty
I wrote the Saturday Essay for @IrishTimes on #Derry: its lost twentieth century, its present fragility - and my hopes for its future. /1
@LittleAcornsBks @nphegarty @IrishTimes @dcsdcouncil @BBCRadioFoyle @derryjournal @niexecutive @columeastwood @bradley_steve @InvestNI @Derry_Chamber @ColmcillePress Great piece, and similar sentiments to one I wrote for @TheNewEuropean a few years ago
At first a love letter to #Derry to reveal tongue & toothache of a city 'on edge' of history, starved of economy, infrastructure, university & investment. A sense of pride, honesty & hard truths. Brilliant piece from #Derry author @nphegarty in @IrishTimes. Take note!
Moments ago: here is how they carry out the #genocide every day, every hour, every minute. Israel bombs a residential building in Nuseirat in the middle of #Gaza
Don’t look away
So heartbreaking
Please watch and listen to his story
Jim McLaughlin was a real life Derry legend. You name it, he won it and he gave everyone who followed his teams a lot of happy memories along the way - especially during the ‘89 treble campaign.
One of the greatest. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
Conor’s been such a great asset to our party and to the New Ireland Commission over the last few years - he’ll be genuinely missed as an important part of the team.
Good luck with exciting new opportunities - know you’ll bring passion, pride and success to what’s next.
😂😂😂
The only path to a durable and sustainable peace in the region begins with a ceasefire and international recognition of the legitimate aspirations of both peoples.
This is a positive step and credit to @IrishMissionUN for co-sponsoring this important resolution.
Fantastic weather in Creggan Country Park this afternoon for a meeting with Gerry Quinn to discuss funding and much-needed redevelopment of the area.
This park is a valuable asset to our city and should be utilised to its full potential.

Update: Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad al-Malki says Ireland & Spain to recognise Palestine ‘within days’.
Source confirms to me indeed it’ll happen this month.. a potential date of May 21 is rumoured.
Other countries like Norway in the mix.. maybe Malta, maybe Slovenia.
Genuinely sorry to hear this @conormurphysf. You’re right to put your health and family first. Best wishes for a quick recovery.
In March, the finance department gave itself top marks for improving civil service record keeping per the RHI inquiry.
But the Covid inquiry has revealed routine wiping of phones and missing meeting minutes.
I asked the Finance Minister what has actually changed at Stormont.
🚨 Up Next: Following on from our successful event in Dublin with Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern…
We’ll be hosting an event in Newry next week with the European Movement Ireland 👏🏻🇪🇺
‘A New Ireland: Our Place in Europe’ with Cllr. Pete Byrne and Noelle O’Connell 🕊️

Widespread, systemic and routine surveillance of journalists pursuing public interest investigations is an absolute scandal.
Stood with Barry and Trevor ahead of today’s hearing and we’ll continue to shine a light on this with them.
Huge thanks to our legal teams @johnfinucane @KRWLaw @NUJofficial @AmnestyNI @caj @columeastwood for helping to defend press freedom in London today #JournalismisNOTaCrime
Unrelenting violence cannot secure peace. A dialogue aimed at reaching a two state solution is the only way forward - and it only works if the legitimate aspirations of both peoples are regarded as equal.
My letter to @David_Cameron on recognising the state of Palestine today.
Don’t look away!
Thanks to former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern for joining us for an in-conversation event tonight in Leinster House.
Bertie’s message to our audience of young people north & south: “you each have a crucial role to play in building a new Ireland” 🙌
Thanks @malcolmbyrne for hosting!
The Northern Ireland Assembly has backed an SDLP Opposition motion calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all hostages.
Ceasefire now.
We know children in Gaza desperately need actions, not words. Words still matter though and so we welcome the passing of an @SDLPlive motion at Stormont that calls for an immediate ceasefire. Our stats & messages were mentioned. We'll keep advocating for an end to this suffering!
Vote on division: Ceasefire in Gaza

To remain silent is impossible. The burning moral question of this age is the plight of the people of Palestine.
Nearly 2 million people in Gaza have suffered months of bombardment, the killing of tens of thousands of innocent people and the obliteration of civilian life.
With more strikes on Rafah overnight, this @SDLPlive proposal is a moment for parties here to unite for peace.
🚨 Tonight: Building a Consensus for Constitutional Change - in conversation with Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern 🕊️
We’re looking forward to discussing how we can bridge the gaps between communities across this island and create historic change.👏🏻
Follow for updates👇🏻
Later today the Assembly will consider an SDLP call for all parties to speak with one voice in the pursuit of a ceasefire in Gaza and peace in the region.
🕊️ Ahead of today’s New Ireland Commission event Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said:
“those who believe in change must be committed to putting in the hard yards to build a prospectus that reaches across traditional divides”
A key part of our Values. 👏🏻
