What has Jesse Norman been up to today?
Jesse Norman is MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire and a member of the Conservative party.
Jesse Norman has 30071 followers on Twitter.
Great to welcome @AlistairCarns to Herefordshire and NMITE @nmite_ac. And to hear his resounding call for government and business alike to recognise the value and potential of veterans' skills to the economy.
Conflicting ideas of liberty | David Wootton
Secretary of State for Work & Pensions Liz Kendall abstained on whether someone substantially motivated by their disability or not wishing to be a burden on others should receive state help to end their lives. All MPs who vote at Third Reading will know the Bill permits this.

Absolutely brilliant to have @jcartlidgemp with us today at @nmite_ac for the Military to Business Showcase, which was packed.
Great to visit the @nmite_ac showcase in Hereford today with @Jesse_Norman. A real privilege to chat with veterans on the trade stands & a group of highly motivated engineering students. A brand new university driving the skills agenda with strong links to Defence - impressive.

Study shows that cycling commuters have:
🧠 19% lower risk of all-cause dementia
🧠 22% lower risk of Alzheimer's
🧠 40% lower risk of young-onset dementia
🧠 17% lower risk of late-onset dementia
Imagine this was a pill💊! How much would people and governments pay?

One of the little-known treasures of Hay-on-Wye: Kate's Bakery. With Adrian and this morning's amazing array of lovely treats.
Highly worrying report just out from @NAOorguk on absence of UK resilience to animal diseases: @DefraGovUK says "risk of an outbreak to which it could not respond effectively is *very high*". https://www.nao.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Resilience-to-animal-diseases-summary.pdf
The current yield on 10-year gilts (UK bonds) is 4.65% v peak of 4.42% during the ClusterTruss
The current yield on 30-year gilts is 5.25% v peak of 5.12% during the ClusterTruss.
So UK government now paying more to borrow (and has been for sometime) than during ClusterTruss.…
"The Spending Review brought to mind President Abraham Lincoln’s immortal line: it managed to compress the greatest number of words into the smallest amount of content." My remarks at Business Questions today.
Utterly damning, and quite correct. This is the @TheIFS verdict on the Chancellor's statement: "If you were baffled by the Chancellor’s speech yesterday, so were we. It did not appear to be a serious effort to provide any useful information to anybody."
.@PJTheEconomist summarises the #SpendingReview in his opening remarks in our event:

Quite. It suggests they *haven't* in fact crunched all the numbers, as the Chancellor claimed. What they've actually done is apply an unrealistic and unvalidated one-size-fits-all formula. Another reason for being doubtful whether the projected savings will actually be realised.
Administration budgets are set to be squeezed.
Efficiency savings would be good and needed, but it's odd that the government thinks the scope for savings is almost identical across every area, regardless of whether these departments are priority areas or not...

Rest in peace, Sly…🖤
Today, the legendary Sly Stone from Sly and the Family Stone, has passed away at age 82…
In honor of his legacy here’s an incredible clip of Sly and the Family Stone performing “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)”
We made it an academy - and thanks to my friend Phil Harris it’s now outstanding…
‘Half a million more pensioners to lose winter fuel payments by 2030’
Govt figures showed no. gaining immediately but costs in 2029. £35k limit is frozen. So costs higher immediately and number gaining smaller in future.
Could have been more transparent
Agree with Jill. HMT is very good at challenging others. I am generally more of a fan than most. But when it makes policy itself there are no checks and balances. Plenty of costly mistakes introduced in fiscal events. It’s a real problem of UK governance.
To be honest, even more than the Budget there’s no point listening to the words, you just have to wait for the tables.

"For those willing to suspend their disbelief that the author is a former prime minister of her Britannic Majesty’s United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the result is a racy, charming and sometimes thought-provoking romp." Me in @FT
Very glad to be able to put the key issue of keeping the £35 million allocated for the River Wye Action Plan together with the River Champion to the Secretary of State @SteveReedMP in the Commons today.
I am very sorry to have to say it, but that speech of Robert Jenrick's was lazy, mendacious, simplistic tripe.
Stylish defence of One Nation Toryism by Jesse Norman MP https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/conservative-election-voters-jesse-norman-conference-b2621801.html
Great summary of my Real Conservatism paper. Thank you
In case anyone wants a (fairly) brief statement of what conservatism is, and why it matters.
🌳 What is real conservatism? And how has it been lost and can it be rediscovered?
@ukonward is delighted to publish @Jesse_Norman 's essay addressing these crucial as #cpc24 kicks off. Jesse explains more in the @Telegraph today
After all, a real conservative is conservative in temperament: modest, public-spirited, frugal, long term, respectful of others, pragmatic, cautious in making commitments, sceptical of grand claims and easy solutions. My piece in @Telegraph today.
