'They know that people won't just suffer—some will die...'

Former Shadow Chancellor @johnmcdonnellMP expresses his anger over the government's decision to cut the Winter Fuel Allowance.

Great to join the WASPI women in Parliament today to support their campaign for pensions justice. Fair compensation is needed urgently as tragically too many of these women have died waiting for justice.

With voters switching off and the far right on the move, it’s crucial we explore new democratic forms. Join us on October 2 for Assemblies – the next steps. With @JamieDriscollNE, @johnmcdonnellMP, Dru Haynes @assembly2021, Rich Wilson @iswe_org & others

I spoke today to oppose the government’s proposal to cut Winter Fuel Allowance. I voted against this because it will not only cause real hardship for many of my constituents this winter there is a real risk some will die.

I simply asked if the government has assessed how many people would be forced into fuel poverty by its policy to cut Winter Fuel Allowance. “Labour refuses to publish impact assessment of winter fuel payment cuts” | The Independent

I explained my position on Winter Fuel Allowance on LBC this morning. I remain in hope Ministers will come forward with an alternative to protect my constituents, who will suffer badly from this change of policy. If not I can’t in all conscience do anything else but vote against.

I was proud to march with & speak to the huge number of people, who today demonstrated their solidarity with the Palestinian people, & all those in Israel, who are calling for an immediate ceasefire & an end to the killing.

Our USC Annual General Meeting opened by @johnmcdonnellMP, a founding supporter in 2014. John is quoting the solidarity appeal from Ukrainian union federation @CFTUU

In the opening session we'll also hear from @e_olesia @YPYurchenko @OstapenkoHanna @MariaExall @terryconway2

These sort of puerile, student politics, bullying comments from an unnamed “Labour source” cheapen the serious debate on such an important issue as the withdrawal of a benefit that could mean some of our constituents suffer real hardship this winter.

This is a devastating critique of Government’s proposal to cut the Winter Fuel Allowance. To proceed with its plans to force this through next week would be viewed as ill judged obstinacy. It’s policies and behaviour like this that can mark & discredit a government permanently.

Great to attend the Asian Women’s Centre Health Advice & Promotion Day with my colleague Cllr Kuldeep Lackmana at Hayes Community Centre. Over the last 35 years the group has worked hard & successfully to provide support to women across our community.

Then this makes two former Labour Shadow Chancellors calling for a rethink by the government of its proposal to means test and effectively cut the Winter Fuel Allowance for pensioners.

Matt Wrack, general secretary of ⁦@fbunational⁩ spot on when he says the Government must ensure lessons are learned across the country from Grenfell and that means ending the fragmentation of the fire and rescue service.

Article sums up what I &, I believe, many Labour MPs are feeling about Winter Fuel Allowance. Unless there’s a serious change by Tuesday’s vote, I will be forced to vote against whilst threat of whip withdrawal will lead to others dissenting by abstaining.
