What has Yasmin Qureshi been up to today?

I am proud of the last Labour Government's decision to introduce the Human Rights Act.
It will come as no shock then that the introduction of a "Bill of Rights" mortifies me. This Bill will make it harder, not easier to seek justice.

The treatment of care home staff during the pandemic by this Govt was horrific. Left without PPE and proper protection they supported the vulnerable
I believe if care workers test positive for Covid they should not be financially penalised for isolating
https://www.yasminqureshi.org.uk/news/2022/07/25/financial-support-for-self-isolating-carers/
As a former Barrister and Shadow Justice Minister, the detail of the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill is of great concern
We need to ensure that the UK honours the Good Friday Agreement whilst complying with the rule of law - this Bill does not do that
https://www.yasminqureshi.org.uk/news/2022/08/02/northern-ireland-protocol-bill/
So the Tory Party was elected on a promise to “level up” deprived areas but did the complete opposite? 😳 https://twitter.com/NewStatesman/status/1555478619253776390
EXCLUSIVE : A video shared with the New Statesman showed Sunak boasting to Conservative Party members that he was prepared to take public money out of “deprived urban areas” to help wealthy towns.
Furious about Sunak's insensitive comments which show the Tories have no interest in truly levelling up places like Bolton, Farnworth, or Britain more generally. Just more campaigning games as usual.
@lisanandy pressing them on this is great to see - keep it up

After years of campaigning, I am pleased to see that the maximum penalty for animal welfare offences has now increased to 5 years
However, there is a loophole in that this Act does not apply to crimes against badgers
I have written to Eustice on this

Have penned this letter to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, expressing my concern that BT's CEO has given himself a significant payrise, to the tune of 33%, whilst workers on the frontline receive little recognition.
We need a world leading regulatory framework to ensure new technologies are used for the public good and not just profits
I would not want to see gene-editing technology, for example, which places animals in a worse state. Have a further read below

The worst crisis in the NHS’s history.
The Government can’t even meet its own targets for eliminating TWO YEAR waits.
The longer the Conservatives are in power, the longer patients will wait.

Our Junior Doctors play a crucial role in keeping our healthcare system running and are all too often ignored by the Govt
We need to give them proper support and a proper pay rise
Have written to Health Sec about this and further thoughts below
https://www.yasminqureshi.org.uk/news/2022/08/02/junior-doctors-pay/
Labour gets stuck in. @AngelaRayner: “Liz Truss is utterly out of touch with the British public. Her fantasy plan would hammer the north and slash the pay of nurses, teachers, and police officers facing the biggest cost of living crisis in a generation…
Dumbfounded to read that making some of my constituents poorer is a good response to the cost of living crisis.
This is just dangerous and ideological.
Pay cuts for nurses and public sector workers in the North?
I don’t think so.
If this is a serious policy, we will fight it tooth and nail.
Spot on @Keir_Starmer - a fantastic result and a fantastic performance from the entire squad over these past few weeks.
The @Lionesses, you have inspired a generation of women and girls.
My daughter and her friends have strong, successful role models in sport because of you.
The entire nation is so proud.

Pleased to back this Bolton Council bid for the latest round of funding from the Levelling Up Fund
Our high streets, whether in Bolton or elsewhere in Britain, need support from local and central govt to flourish
https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/20586243.bolton-town-centre-levelling-bid-open-hotel-debenhams-unit/
Pleased to see our local paper @TheBoltonNews @RJKDuggan backing this campaign
As I have consistently said, in 2019 Johnson and Tory candidates across the Britain, promised to level up Britain
They've failed, but Labour can lead on this

Newspaper titles across the North unite tonight to warn Rishi Sunak/Liz Truss not to turn their back on our region once in Number 10. A lot was promised in 2019 and we want to see delivery #TheNorthRemembers
Great news for all in Greater Manchester. By bringing buses onto public ownership @AndyBurnhamGM is leading the way and delivering for our city region
Another legal hurdle (final one I think - I’m surely someone will correct me if I’m wrong) cleared by Burnham in his move towards bus franchising. Further green light to other cities looking at it, of which there are several
Gordon Brown oversaw record levels of investment in health and education; lifted 1m children and 900k pensioners out of poverty; introduced working tax credits and the Minimum Wage; helped deliver Sure Start and much, much more.
Rishi Sunak... did nothing like that. https://twitter.com/johnredwood/status/1550338712994709505
Rishi Sunak says he wants to become a Thatcherite. In office he was a Gordon Brown tribute act.
Gave a comment to @TheBoltonNews on child poverty rates in my constituency.
Figures show that 46.1% of children were living in poverty in 2020/21
After 12 years of managed decline in Bolton and Britain we need a Labour govt.
https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/20276467.bolton-child-poverty-exceeds-national-average/
In Darlington y’day I announced plans to restore power, ownership and contribution to our communities.
A new Community Right to Buy will be a first step towards greater financial autonomy for our towns, villages and cities and give local people power over things that matter.
🧵
With @lisanandy's announcement yesterday on community assets we see Labour leading the way and claiming "levelling up", whilst the 4 remaining Tory candidates refuse to even acknowledge their own 2019 slogan.
"Far from being levelled up, the three seats of Bolton are literally being levelled down. Keir Starmer’s route to No 10 flows through each Bolton seat – and owning ‘levelling up’ will allow us to get into government," @YasminQureshiMP writing in May: https://labourlist.org/2022/05/labour-can-and-must-own-levelling-up-and-define-it-on-its-own-terms/
Latest of my monthly columns in @TheBoltonNews covers the ongoing Conservative leadership contest and what it means for Bolton, Britain and Labour.
As @bphillipsonMP said on Sunday, we don't fear any of them. Bring on a General Election.

Thanks to @Politics_co_uk for the write up about the Srebrenica debate yesterday alongside @aliciakearns - we must never forget this atrocity

Spoke up for Karen Smith and other residents living on Riverside Drive in Prestolee, Bolton South East.
This saga has been going on for 7 years now and we are yet to see a single spade in the ground. It is frankly unacceptable - my residents need and deserve peace.
My dearest brother Mazhar Qureshi passed away this morning.
Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to God, and to God we will return).
He was a kind, generous, and wise soul who was always so dedicated and supportive of his sisters. He leaves a big hole in my life.💔
Eid Mubarak to all those celebrating #Eidaladha this year. As always, it's a time for reflection and for families, friends and loved ones to come together
Our new Education Minister... https://twitter.com/bphillipsonMP/status/1545476559364055041
Ministers aren’t expected to be perfect.
But is it really too much to ask that they don’t treat the public like this?
Latest update on the work in Bolton town centre - the Council have given me assurances that this is only temporary.
I will continue to chase this up to ensure that it is resolved as soon as possible.

Just on Sky News talking about the spurious allegations made by Conservative MPs towards Keir and Angela - there's a clear divide between Labour and the Tories, an honest, open party with leaders of the highest integrity, and a party led by a criminal squatter in No10.
I’ve always said no rules were broken when I was in Durham.
The police have completed their investigation and agreed: there is no case to answer.
For me, this was always a matter of principle. Honesty and integrity matter. You will always get that from me.
Glad that this has been put to bed and we can move on from these pathetic allegations from Tory MPs.
Labour are performing well in the polls, forced the PM from office, Tories/Govt in disarray. If a General Election does loom then we are in a great place
BREAKING: Durham Police will not be taking any action against Keir Starmer, Angela Rayner, or anyone else for the so-called 'Beergate' gathering.
No fines and no rules were broken.
Compare and contrast....
A Prime Minister who has been deemed unfit for office needs to leave straight away, not spin it out until the autumn.
.@JamesDalyMP is finally among the last to resign. Yet was silent when Johnson lied to the Queen. Silent on bullying, party-gate and the appalling behavior of Johnson. And nothing to say on the sexual assault allegations facing his former Deputy Whip. #DalyFail https://twitter.com/JamesDalyMP/status/1544779547517779971
I have tonight taken the decision to resign as a Parliamentary Private Secretary at the DWP.
😂😂😂😂😂 what when you realised know one was going to call you to offer you a ministerial job, or was it that Boris administration is being forced out by next week? #nobackbone #DalyFail https://twitter.com/JamesDalyMP/status/1544779547517779971
It’s no longer about just swapping the man at the top.
It’s clear:
The only way the country can get the fresh start it deserves is by getting rid of this Tory government.
Desperate from the Prime Minister. #PMQs
Absolute bang on from @Keir_Starmer - the Cabinet sit by and prop him up, they know exactly what he is like, he's shown us many times, and they fundamentally do not care. #PMQs
"I abhor bullying," says Boris Johnson who point-blank refused to act when an official investigation found the Home Secretary Priti Patel was guilty of it #PMQs
So Johnson can't even answer a yes or no question about such a serious matter. The man is absolutely shameless. #PMQs
Perfect tone from Keir and a pathetic response from the PM. He didn't remove the whip for days, he still sits as an MP, and despite knowing the allegations, he made him a Minister! Barren. #PMQs
Johnson says "today is a big day" without a hint of irony. His Government and premiership are in free fall and the days are numbered. Comical #PMQs
Looking forward to #PMQs today. Should be a quiet one...
Every single member or former member of the Cabinet is complicit in propping up this barren Prime Minister and barren Government.
Who is staying, who has gone?
The list so far 👇 https://bbc.in/3yb5kXu
Whether they stay or go now, they all backed him
When he lied,
Broke the law,
Laughed about it,
Lied again,
Dismissed the Ministerial Code,
Ignored serious misconduct,
And lied again.
Tory Ministers are all responsible for what Boris Johnson’s done. They’re all unfit to govern https://twitter.com/BBCPolitics/status/1544412825837264896
Who is staying, who has gone?
The list so far 👇 https://bbc.in/3yb5kXu
The Tory party is corrupted and changing one man won’t fix that.
Only a real change of government can give Britain the fresh start it needs.
Angela Rayner sums it up - this "charade will not wash."
Everyone knows what the Prime Minister is like - he doesn't care.
It doesn't matter what line Michael Ellis or other craven Ministers take, nothing will change that.
Michael Ellis MP says it's a "pleasure" to respond to questions about standards in public life. Honestly, you could not write the brass neck of this
