Dominic Raab won’t approve but I did indeed go the opera last week (it cost me £62).
Tom Eisner, a working-class lad from Buxton near where I grew up kindly invited me. He’s been playing violin at Glyndebourne for 36 years.
Never let anyone tell you you’re not good enough. 🎻
Careers advice opens doors for young people, especially raising the profile of apprenticeships.
Under Labour every child will receive professional careers advice and work experience at school, ensuring they leave education ready for work and for life.

Our plan, From Full Throttle to Full Charge, sets out how industry can work with govt to build an auto ecosystem fit for a zero emission future. If there is the will, effort & action from govt, they will find it more than matched by industry #SMMTSummit

Instead of trying to resolve the rail dispute the Tories are using it as another excuse to attack trade unions my piece for @LabourList https://labourlist.org/2022/06/breaking-strikes-using-agency-workers-is-recklessly-gambling-with-public-safety/
What society will this Government leave behind?
They’re forcing the closure of arts and humanities courses across the country. They’re reducing opportunity, lowering horizons and widening inequality.
They are anti-aspiration.

Labour offers a proper plan for change, to get Britain’s economy growing again so businesses and families can reap the rewards.
Our victory in Wakefield shows there's renewed optimism and hope.

Dreadful.
A hangover of the Trump era, the US is going backwards.. and here in the UK, we should fear how this Con Govt is undermining our judiciary with the aim to make our own Supreme Court one of political appointment https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jun/24/roe-v-wade-decision-reaction-republicans-democrats?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

And to @RichardFoordLD in Tiverton.
NEW🚨: Google searches for 'join union' have increased by 184% in the last week.
The Education Secretary is treating children’s learning as a political battlefield.
No-one wants strikes and no-one wants more disruption to our children’s education.
A short thread 🧵
Two stunning election defeats.
“Somebody must take responsibility..” The writing is on the wall yet the Cabinet stands by the Prime Minister defending the indefensible.
Meanwhile, a delicious irony that the PM is currently away in Rwanda
My letter of resignation to the Prime Minister.
If you live in Wakefield, today is your chance to send a message to the Tories the can’t ignore:
Vote for @SimonLightwood.
Vote for a fresh start.

Childcare is essential to our economic success.
But under the Tories it’s unaffordable and unavailable: pushing women out of work and pricing people out of parenting.
Labour’s recovery plan would invest in the early years premium & school clubs for all.

The Windrush generation helped build Britain.
But the Tories' hostile environment left many homeless, jobless and without healthcare. Victims are still waiting for the justice and compensation they deserve.
Windrush descendent @DavidLammy tells their story. #WindrushDay
Thousands of holiday flights cancelled.
People unable to renew their passports.
Biggest rail strike in a generation.
The Tories simply aren’t doing their job.

Canada has sanctioned Alexander Lebedev on a list of 14 people it says has ‘directly enabled Putin’s senseless war in Ukraine.’
At today’s Home Office Qs, I ask for the 7th time, did Boris Johnson meet with him without officials, during the Salisbury poisoning? No answer.
Visiting NATO Allied Maritime Command, I spoke to our troops about the situation in Ukraine and the need to bolster Britain’s defence and security at home and abroad.
Labour’s commitment to NATO is unshakeable. We stand with our allies against Putin's illegal war in Ukraine.
Grant Shapps should spend less time writing to the Labour Party and more time doing his job
Twelve years of Tory rule and clearer than ever they are out of ideas.
Grammar schools:
❌aren’t popular among parents,
❌don’t improve outcomes across the education system,
❌ingrain expectations of failure.

I know the challenges we face can be overcome if government works hand in hand with business.
It’s a partnership that can be the route out of the low growth we’re facing, towards a dynamic economy where opportunity is shared.

Delighted to learn overnight that Chris King has been elected as Councillor for Leamington Clarendon ward.
He joins the excellent Labour team of Cllrs and I know he will be superb.
@UKLabour
A real privilege to speak at the #TimesCEOSummit today, talking about how Labour will make Britain the best place to start and grow a business.
Our new review will make sure start-ups here can reach their full potential, in one of the most innovative countries in the world.
Great speech by @RachelReevesMP today.
The future Labour will build for Britain will be one where government empowers workers with the skills, healthcare, and childcare they need to flourish.

Six years ago our colleague and friend, Jo Cox, was murdered.
In Jo’s memory we continue to look ahead with a belief that the world she believed in so passionately remains within our grasp.
“We are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us.”
As costs soar, funding of just 7 pence extra a meal is pathetic and will do little to ensure children are getting a healthy, balanced meal. My comment in @DailyMirror👇🏻

Lord Geidt gone.
Given the job title of ‘ethics adviser to the PM’ is an oxymoron, it’s hardly surprising https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-61819747
The Govt's botched, last minute approach to awarding A-level results over the last two years has stored up problems.
Now some of the most talented students in the country are set to miss out. Again.
When will this Govt stop punishing young people?

Prime Minister, it’s time to ditch the gimmicks and face up to reality: under your leadership, Britain’s economy is going backwards.
#PMQs
The Tories have let Britain’s growth grind to a halt.
And they are too distracted by their own failings to deal with it.
Labour will get the cost of living crisis under control and build a thriving economy.
It’s truly despicable that a 12-time Conservative candidate sent me a racist death threat.
I will never be silenced by abuse, but this raises serious questions for the Conservatives about the prevalence of anti-Black racism in their party.

Govt support for the poorest university students will fall to lowest level for 7 yrs next year. Yet:
• 75% of students are worried about managing financially
• 25% have LESS than £50 a month to live on after rent and bills
• 5% are using food banks

In the Education Select Committee, the Universities Minister is banging on about her student loan reforms being 'fair'.
Yet her department’s own analysis literally says women (and minorities) will end up paying more and for longer due to student loan changes.

Ministers ignored all warnings about deep problems in this policy - from treatment of torture victims to the risk of making people trafficking worse.
Shows shamefully that they care more about picking fights than serious policies. They’ve lost all British decency & common sense
Damning stuff.
Are you a Warwick and Leamington based exporter to Europe? If so I’m keen to hear from local businesses about the impact you’ve experienced on exports to Europe.
Please drop me a line at matt.western.mp@parliament.uk
Yet more evidence of the impact of the poor deal @BorisJohnson negotiated with the EU; there are many things Ministers could do to reduce this impact but so far they aren’t prepared to; putting jobs at risk & making the cost of living crisis worse https://www.ft.com/content/2f63ef97-8d49-47a4-accd-4fb2e7ee9a5a
The Health Secretary dodged my question re the Rosalind Franklin Megalab in Leamington.
He must know it's the last Covid testing lab (working at <20% capacity) which has cost £1.1bn (2x its original budget).
Now some scientists are being paid a week's wages for one day's work!
The Director of Freedom of Speech must not be a friend or ex-colleague of, or donor to, anyone in Govt.
OfS chair and Tory peer Lord Wharton ran the PM's election campaign - and his company also donated £8,000 to the party after his appointment.
So much for 'independent.'
We are now the only major European market not incentivising the sale of electric vehicles with grants.
This is a huge backwards step.
Please see my reaction to the Government scrapping plug-in grants below:
Incredible! UK Government already advertising a job that’s not yet been signed off in legislation.

Worrying to see attacks on our universities and govt free speech proposals, are based on something the Minister can’t evidence but ‘believes’ to be true.
Public policy should be based on evidence, not anecdotes.
Universities and students deserve better.
