I'm stepping up the campaign to save Reading Gaol and turn it into a world-class arts & heritage hub

On Wednesday, I will be meeting with the government and the prisons minister to discuss the possibility of Banksy supporting the bid to save the Gaol

☎️ 470,000 mental health 999 calls each year.
🚑 Thousands going to A&E in a mental health crisis.
⏳ Some children stuck in A&E for days waiting for a mental health bed.

The Government needs to get a grip of the mental health crisis across our country.

It was excellent to see the East Reading Festival return to Palmer Park after a three year break. It's a reminder of the huge amount of creativity in Reading. A big thank you to the organisers, the local artists, businesses, and charities, for making the festival happen.

It was an honour to attend Armed Forces day at Forbury gardens on Saturday. I joined the @mayorofreading and the Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire to pay tribute to the veterans of our armed forces and to those currently serving.

The Tories now face a credible Labour party: a government-in-waiting with a plan to deliver on the country’s demands.

We will not shy away from that responsibility, duck those challenges or fail to grasp the opportunities our country has.

On Monday, I spoke in the HS2 (Crewe - Manchester) Bill debate to put forward the environmental and economic benefits of rail investment.

I am in favour of further investment in our national rail infrastructure and I urge the government to deliver HS2 on time and in full.

Huge congratulations to @simonlightwood on his election in #Wakefield. I look forward to working with Simon in Parliament to deliver on our shared values for the country and our constituents.

The Labour Party @UKLabour

Congratulations to @simonlightwood!

The new Labour MP for Wakefield. 🌹

Over the moon that Jayne Kirkham has tonight been selected as @UKLabour’s new Parliamentary candidate in Truro and Falmouth. She brilliant, local, determined and will make a caring and energetic MP. Well done @JayneKirkham4 🌹

Since the 2019 election over 300 GP practices have closed in England.

This worrying trend is reflected in Reading East, where pressures on GPs have lead to two local surgeries recently closing their doors for the last time.

An estimated 1/5 of UK adults are now supporting a relative, friend or neighbour with problems caused by chronic illness, mental ill-health, disability or old age.

I recognise the vital work of unpaid carers, and back calls for them to be provided with the support they deserve.

Last week, I was able to meet the @BreastCancerNow team and discuss the importance of early diagnosis and treatment in breast cancer cases.

I support their calls for the government to raise the Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS) to 95%.

#NoTimeToWaste

Last night's @BBCPanorama investigation found disturbing evidence that some social media algorithms may still be promoting violent content to vulnerable young people. This is utterly appalling.

I raised my concerns about these findings in the Commons Chamber yesterday.

Two years ago today, James Furlong, Joe Ritchie-Bennett, and David Wails were brutally murdered in the appalling attack that took place in Forbury Gardens.

I would like to pay tribute to them on the anniversary of this tragedy; my heart goes out to their family and friends.

My latest update covers my work in the constituency and in Westminster last week. I discuss:

-The cost of living crisis 💷
-Challenging the government on unacceptable passport office delays ✈️
-Tackling local anti-social behaviour 🚓
-Local planning and heritage issues 🏡

Congratulations to all the staff, students and governors at @HighdownSchool as they celebrate their 50th anniversary, this weekend.

Great to be able to join this litter pic with Church Ward @RDGLabourCllrs councillors Paul Woodward, Andrew Hornsby- Smith and Ruth McEwan.

There is no point in Govt blaming anyone else but themselves.

Ministers are pursuing a policy they know isn’t workable & that won’t tackle criminal gangs.

But they still paid Rwanda £120m & hired a jet that hasn’t taken off because they just want a row & someone else to blame.

Nicola Sturgeon wants to focus on division. It’s an attempt to distract from her failures.

The next electoral contest in Scotland will be a general election, not a referendum.

Our chance to bring our country together, boot out Boris and build the future, together.

This afternoon I intervened in the 'Passport Office Backlog' debate to raise concerns on behalf of my constituents who are facing unacceptable delays.

The Home Office predicted a surge of applications, but has done nothing to prevent the chaos of the last few months.

(1/2)

This blows apart Boris Johnson’s nonsense claims that everyone is getting their passport in six weeks.

The backlog is causing misery, and this hapless government is refusing to even acknowledge it.

In this week's update, I discuss:

-The Queen's Platinum Jubilee 👑
-How the government is failing pensioners during the cost of living crisis 💷
-The importance of further investment in education 📚
-The need for stronger powers to protect green spaces from development 🌳

(1/2)

These are jaw-dropping sums.

£11 billion lost to fraudsters and criminals and now this.

Labour will get a grip of this Conservative government’s wasteful spending and treat taxpayers’ money with the respect it deserves.

I am delighted to report that the planning application to demolish the Adwest building was turned down at Wokingham Borough Council’s planning committee meeting last night.

This is a really important step on the way to preserving this wonderful art deco building.

(1/3)

To date over 770 local residents have completed my 'Adwest/Miles Aircraft Building' survey. I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to share their views about the future of this important piece of Woodley's aviation history.

(1/2)

I was recently given a tour of the former Adwest building and it was fascinating to learn more about Woodley’s aviation history.

I was also able to observe the site of the proposed development and its proximity to nearby houses, which I remain extremely concerned about.

(1/4)

Yesterday, I challenged the government on their inadequate response to the cost of living crisis, which sees more support being offered to second home owners than those who are in greatest need.

This government just doesn’t seem to grasp the severity of this crisis.

(1/2)

The Tories are divided.

They are focused on propping up Boris Johnson with no plan to tackle the issues facing you and your family.

Only Labour has a plan to fix the cost of living crisis, grow our economy and restore trust in politics.

The choice is clearer than ever before:

Divided Tories propping up Boris Johnson with no plan to tackle the issues you are facing.

Or a united Labour Party with a plan to fix the cost of living crisis and restore trust in politics.

Labour will get Britain back on track.

Baker Street Jubilee @bsanaorg @edencommunities !! Snake holding millipedes!!! and fun w/ the Queen w the local politicians Cllr Mohamned Ayub and @MattRodda !!! Time to come along til 6!!

After 70 years of service to the nation, this weekend Her Majesty the Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a #PlatinumJubilee.

This is an incredible achievement and I wish Her Majesty a very happy Jubilee from myself and from constituents of Reading East.

🏫 ADWEST BUILDING PLANNING UPDATE 🏫

The plans to demolish the former Adwest/Miles Aircraft building are due to come before Wokingham Borough's planning committee on Wednesday 8 June.

Please share your views about these plans here: https://mattroddamp.com/milesaircraft

(1/2)

This weekend many constituents will be attending street parties and events to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

This is a wonderful opportunity for friends and neighbours to meet, show our community spirit and celebrate all the things that make our country great.

(1/3)

Today marks the beginning of #VolunteersWeek, which runs from 1 - 7 June.

I have kicked the week off with a visit to the fantastic Lunch Bunch in Woodley, who are doing amazing work supporting local families with much needed food packages in the half-term holidays.

(1/4)

I recently visited Battle Street in Reading town centre to discuss the council’s plans to create adult social care provision and affordable housing on the former Central Pool site

Please view these interesting proposals and make your comments here: https://consult.reading.gov.uk/dens/battle-street-development/consult_view/

In this week's constituency update, I discuss:

-The cost of living crisis 💷
-The need for swifter government action to aid Ukrainian refugees 🇺🇦
-My work to protect green spaces from development 🌳
-Tackling the challenge of overdevelopment in Reading town centre 🏢

The findings of Sue Gray's report are shocking, and they lay bare the rot at the heart of No 10

The numerous events held in Downing Street show an utter lack of respect for the members of the public, NHS staff and key workers who made such enormous sacrifices during the pandemic

Yesterday, I spoke in the debate on the cost of living crisis to highlight the extreme financial pressures that so many people in Reading and Woodley are currently experiencing.

(1/2)

Work should be a defence from rising cost of living but under Tories:

▪️8 million in in-work poverty

▪️Employment lower than pre pandemic

▪️790,000 people ‘hidden unemployed’

Labour will reform employment support to help provide good well-paid jobs.

I would like to update you on my work over the last week. In my latest video I discuss:

- My support for a windfall tax ⛽
- The cost of living crisis, fuel poverty and inflation 💷
- My work on green pensions investments 🌎
- Local planning and community issues 🏡
