Last week at #NYClimateWeek @Climate_Action_ including the Climate Action Coalition held events with @UNFCCC @simonstiell @cathmckenna @AlokSharma_RDG- thanks to our committed partners and great to meet so many companies dedicated to delivering their net zero commitments

In 2010, coal made up almost a third of UK power generation.
In 2019, when I was Energy Minister, we went for the first ever fortnight without coal. From today, there will be no coal power.
Don’t let anyone tell you that the energy transition and net zero won’t be possible.

As predicted, talking down net zero and promoting new oil and gas backfired spectacularly- costing support while gaining no extra votes. As I stated then, it would be the worst mistake of Sunak’s premiership.
A lesson for all not to abandon the future.

My piece in the @guardian on why rowing back on net zero was such a disastrous mistake. As I set out in the #MissionZero report, we must now seize the economic opportunity that leading the energy transition can deliver for the UK

These elections have shown pro-environment parties and mayors who made net zero central to their campaigns made significant gains.

Reform have won 2 council seats out of 2500.

Time to recognise the net zero row back and kowtowing to an extreme fringe was a strategic disaster

Must be why she told MPs during leadership hustings she believed in net zero, signed the Conservative Environment Pledge and asked me to deliver the #MissionZero report… lizards of the world unite!

As I stated in my resignation letter, the future will judge harshly any MP that votes for new additional fossil fuels.

Today’s legislation makes no economic sense, will deliver no additional energy security, and breaks the UK’s international commitments on climate action.

To destroy original copies of documents dating back centuries, especially the last wills and testaments of the dead, is a huge mistake. The past is not ours to destroy, we should be the guardians of all its records for the future

International students are not migrants. They aren’t planning on settling in the U.K., the vast majority return home after their studies. They also contribute nearly £42 billion per annum to the U.K. economy.

Take them out of the migration statistics, they don’t belong there.

My speech to Parliament today setting out why I cannot vote for the King’s Speech and its measures to legislate for more new oil and gas licences:

My view on why we do not need a new oilfield in addition to what we have. Politics is about priorities and our priority should be reducing fossil fuel use through renewable power and greater energy efficiency. To carry on as normal cannot be an option.

This week may have been a dark week for progress on getting UK off expensive fossil fuels, but the shadow it casts into the future is what’s most concerning.

Investment will go elsewhere, while energy bills and costs will continue to rise. Shouldn’t really need explaining:

If there is are any trade-offs to be made, it is to be honest that delaying the UK’s ability to lead the energy transition will mean less investment, slower growth, fewer jobs and ultimately higher bills. That’s the consequences of this week’s decisions.

Improved insulation and fossil free heating can save billions on household bills rather than waste energy.
It should be a total no-brainer and was a #NetZeroReview mission.

I’ve written a new report MISSION RETROFIT launching on 28/9. To watch/register:
https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0qcOmrqzwiE9yMHPSDyc2az0d4Cyts8Nty#/registration

My article for the @telegraph on why delaying carefully planned and proportionate net zero measures will only cause economic pain and cost householders more. We cannot afford for ‘not zero’ to damage businesses and jobs

Agreeing to new oil and gas fields won’t help the UK. It will only create more declining and stranded assets that will cost our future economy when we can be investing and creating jobs and growth in clean energy.

And as I’ve consistently said, leadership requires us to lead:

This is factually untrue @DavidGHFrost

Please read the Net Zero Review before making incorrect statements like this. The Mission Zero report very clearly sets out trade offs and costs, with new factual analysis on this

Net zero isn’t a crusade.

It has always been a proportionate and pragmatic approach to protecting our environment and economy against vast risks and costs while reducing our emissions in a way that delivers new jobs, future industries and doesn’t leave communities behind.

Some summer reading for anyone thinking that further delaying action on net zero might be a good idea
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1128689/mission-zero-independent-review.pdf

Taking action on climate change should be cross-party and not used for playing party politics if we are serious about delivering emissions reductions across a period that will span several governments.
This issue is too important to create dividing lines or play political games.

I have tabled amendments to the Energy Bill at Report Stage including legislating for:
🌍No new coal mines
🌍Ban on gas flaring and venting
🌍2035 net zero power grid
🌍Agreement on an end date for new oil and gas licences
🌍Leaving Energy Charter Treaty
👉https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/bills/cbill/58-03/0295/amend/energy_rm_rep_0630.pdf

The easiest and fastest way to reduce net migration is to remove international students from these artificial statistics.

They aren’t migrants, the vast majority leave after their studies, they subsidise home student fees and research, and spend over £40bn in local economies.

My article for the @guardian today on why a new oilfield that could potentially produce 500 million barrels of oil cannot be compatible with the UK’s ambitions to be a global leader in clean energy and deliver net zero by 2050

Our Civil servants are outstanding professionals. In the 5 departments I served, & in Chairing the Net Zero Review, they have all worked tirelessly & delivered.

My one regret not being in government since 2020 is not having the chance to work alongside & learn more from them.

I am not prepared to break international law or the human rights conventions that the UK has had a proud history of playing a leading role in establishing.

I will not be voting for the bill tonight.

The Mission Zero Report will be formally launched at an event on Monday 11.30am-1pm at @KingsCollegeLon.

I will be speaking alongside Climate Minister @grahamstuart followed by a panel discussion.
