Tax cuts for the rich lead to higher income inequality. But they do not have any significant effect on economic growth or unemployment. Evidence for 18 OECD countries over 1965-2015 in this new paper published in Socio-Economic Review:
"The charitable sector is much stronger in richer areas,” said Lord Gus O’Donnell, a former cabinet secretary. “In poorer places...help through the charitable sector is much weaker, the amount of giving is lower, so you’re in a vicious circle, reinforcing inequality.”

@RichardJMurphy Sounds like a plan
@D_Blanchflower Yes. But what is needed in response is a simple mechanism for mass voluntary insolvency arrangements, automatically binding on creditors - as I outlined in a thread on Friday
I’ve read the morning papers and listened to the political commentary. And what gets me is that it seems almost no one appreciates that when between 25% and 50% of all people in the UK are not going to be able to pay their bills this winter what we’re facing is systems breakdown.
75% of people in the Western Isles live on community owned land. It hasn't solved everything but it has certainly been transformational. Momentum now building in the South of Scotland. No going back... https://twitter.com/ScottishField/status/1555477820633128960

🌾 Farmers in Sri Lanka have been calling for a shift to more sustainable farming for decades. But this is not how they would have done it.
Moving to new forms of #farming takes deliberate planning and decades to manage.

@AngusMacNeilSNP Quite well, I suspect.
Spotted this cute seal in beautiful Argyll. I think s/he might be a bit of an attention seeker 🦭😉
Rishi Sunak was "funnelling taxpayers' money to rich Tory shires" after he told party members he had been working to divert funding from "deprived urban areas.
Publicly he was for leveling-up, privately crushing the poorer areas.
Can't trust a Tory.

Easier to understand in table form (I've also added cheese, specially for Liz Truss).
Similar fun times for British sheep farmers...
EU deal: NZ can export max 38,000 tonnes of sheep meat tariff free (quota phased in over 7 years).
UK deal: NZ can export 35,000 tonnes of sheep meat tariff free, rising to 50,000 tonnes in year 5 and an infinite amount in year 16.
The EU's trade deal with NZ allows NZ to export 10,000 tonnes of beef tariff free to the EU (phased in over 7 years).
The UK's trade deal with NZ allows NZ to export 12,000 tonnes of beef to the UK in year 1, rising to 38,820 tonnes in year 10 and an infinite amount after that.
Astonishing!!! 👇.... How does the independent Ireland next door compare ?
Fun fact: By Q1 this year Northern Ireland’s economy had still not fully recovered from the 2008 recession. Output was still 0.1% below Q2 2007. It will probably have recovered in Q2 this year, just in time for the next recession.
Good luck to London Highland Festival 👍🏴😁

Brilliant, straight talking from @graceblakeley this morning. Great to see on msm👌 https://twitter.com/SaulStaniforth/status/1555072504506507264
Economist @graceblakeley says raising interest rates won't help control inflation, because inflation is being driven by rising energy prices. Grace is also clear the idea of a wage price spiral is nonsense - workers demanding wages in line with inflation need to be supported #GMB

Scary night. Near miss as you say, Pat. https://twitter.com/tirnaog_09/status/1555087666508664832
Those of you who attended the Nottingham Forest v Celtic European tie in 1983 will have witnessed a near miss in the away end as overcrowding combined with police opening the outside gates to ease crushing outside, led to a very dangerous situation.

“We need to move away from the ECHR definition of asylum.. it is far too broad” says Rishi Sunak
What the f*** is “far too broad” about the right to life & prohibition of torture, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment!
& now he’s even using the term “lefty lawyers!”
Anas Sarwar refuses to recognise Scotland’s referendum mandate but the imposter’s got the nerve to state:
“The Scottish people are sovereign and have the right to determine the best form of government for our needs.”
@ScottishLabour
Staggering new chart from the IMF. We all know that increasing energy costs hit low income households hardest, but in the UK that impact will be the second biggest in the world, and the differential with the best off will also be the biggest. What is the gov’t going to do?
NEW: Liz Truss tells hustings in Cardiff Scottish Government is spending its 'entire resources' on independence. FM revealed in May the £20m set aside for the planned indyref2 next year is 0.05% of Scottish budget https://www.heraldscotland.com/politics/20598973.truss-claims-snp-government-spending-entire-resources-independence/
"Consumer group Which? estimates that 5.7 million households have experienced at least one “affordability issue” in April, as cash-strapped homes struggle to cope with soaring bills and other costs." The Bank of England will raise interest rates today. What I want to know is how increasing these rates will help people pay their gas, electricity, rent, mortgage, council tax, water and broadband bills? If it won't why are they deliberately making life impossible for millions?
Seems to Effie D there is really no union, so some can't be unionist.
The submission is complete
Effie as a Spanish polis
We all know he means “criticism of the UK” and we are headed down an extremely dark path.
Fortunately the comedy is likely to continue with Truss - her target electorate is the Tory party membership. #PMTruss 😁🤣😁
Liz Truss, who is probably going to be the United Kingdom’s next PM, has so far dismissed Mark Drakeford as a “low energy Jeremy Corbyn" and called Nicola Sturgeon an “attention seeker”.
Just imagine if NS even once ended up at this level in an interview?? We'd never hear the end of it in the biased yoon media. Yet here's #ThickLizzy at level zero grey matter on numerous occasions...btw it would be easy to add many more moments like this. https://twitter.com/jonlis1/status/1550197765904515074
Sometimes, very occasionally, your imposter syndrome may be valid
Let's hope Liz keeps talking!
She might actually be a bigger gift to independence than Boris!!
🏴👍😁👍🏴
‘The entire resources of the Scottish Govt are being used to run an independence campaign…Nicola Sturgeon is agitating for independence….I think it’s completely irresponsible’ claims Liz Truss, who doesn’t seem to understand democratic mandates. #Scotland

You better hope you don't need this Doctor in Scotland👇 - as the far away UK Gov, are saying the Doctor cannot be in Scotland.

This route keeps matter of independence plebiscite election in timetable of Scot Gov when//if the SC bid fails in October.
A Westmin election could be called at 6 weeks notice and not at time of Scot Gov choosing.
@savanQadir @AngusMacNeilSNP Yes it can be done. The First Minister would need to resign and the SNP/Greens use their majority to block the nomination of another First Minister. Then a new Scottish General Election would be called. The Scotland Act 1998, Section 3(1)(b).
