Incredibly sad news. What an inspiration, what a life she had, what difference she made to many others. #rip

Bit late is congratulating the brilliant @AndrewHWestern on being selected for Stretford & Urmston as Labour’s candidate. Kate is a hard act to follow but Andrew is up to it and up for it, and will be an excellent MP. Massive well done!

Andrew Western @AndrewHWestern

Absolutely delighted to have been selected as the @uklabour candidate for Stretford and Urmston, thank you to members for placing your trust in me!

Huge congratulations to @SimonLightwood - Labour’s new MP for Wakefield!

A historic victory — this city deserved a fresh start, and you delivered it.

Wakefield is the birthplace of the next Labour government.

So proud of Wakefield’s new MP, the fantastic @simonlightwood.

This was @UKLabour’s biggest victory here since we were last in government.

This decisive result shows Labour is winning the trust of the British people, and firmly on the path to power.

Quite the exchange in Bill committee 👀🍆📷

But the point remains that the new (and welcome) Cyber flashing offence in the Online Safety Bill will only bring true, meaningful change if it’s based on consent rather than intent.

The Bill MUST go further to protect women & girls!

Noa Hoffman @hoffman_noa

Unsure if tech minister Chris Philp expected to be asked if he's ever received a "dick pic" during the online safety bill debate yesterday, but the exchange with @AlexDaviesJones is now immortalised in Hansard

This Conservative Government’s Bill of Rights con is an attack on women.

It will make it harder for victims of rape to get justice.

But it comes as no surprise from a Govt that has effectively decriminalised rape.

The government is "goading" the RMT into striking - @UKLabour

💬 Shadow Culture Secretary @LucyMPowell says the government wants the #RailStrikes to happen to "save their own skin" at the next election...

Today is #WindrushDay2022, 74 years since the Empire Windrush ship docked in the UK.

The Windrush generation helped build Britain and today we celebrate their huge contribution.

But their fight for justice continues, as many of my constituents here in Manchester will testify.

Rail workers kept our country going during the pandemic.

Many lost colleagues and friends.

They are the same people this shameless Prime Minister promised a high-wage economy to, before presiding over the biggest fall in living standards on record.

Great programme charting the evolution of @glastonbury This year will be my 20th Glastonbury (I’ve worked out), first going in 1993. It’s certainly evolved a lot in that time, as have I, and my experience of it!

Can’t wait for this year 😉

Fantastic to be back in Wakefield with Labour’s brilliant candidate @SimonLightwood.

This Thursday is Wakefield’s chance for a fresh start.

A chance to send a message to the Tories that they can’t ignore: Wakefield deserves better.

Putting your name to something, means something. No one does it lightly.

Today I put my name to @UKLabour & to the idea that decency, competency & values matter. I joined the party to help steward a fair, prosperous & entrepreneurial economy. Here's why:

⬜🟩🟩🟩🟩didn’t do it!! First time in months.

The Whyte Report’s findings about British Gymnastics are shocking and distressing, revealing systemic physical and emotional abuse. My thoughts are with all those who've experienced abuse in the sport. I sincerely thank those who bravely shared their experiences with the review.

📺 Channel 4 unashamedly supports British jobs and the British economy.
It champions jobs and skills in the creative industries in the regions and nations.
In an era of stagnant growth, when Britain needs to win the global race for jobs, Ministers are wrong to sell it off.

Confirmation that France's heavy handed policing was based on false and insulting assumptions about Liverpool fans. They must offer a full apology

Labour launches review of business funding to support startups

📺 Selling off Channel 4 is not just the wrong thing to do as a patriot or for nostalgic reasons, it’s also disastrous for our world-renowned creative economy.

Channel 4 - like the BBC - is fundamental to the foundations of our global success. We flog it off at our peril.

The Culture Secretary’s Channel 4 sell off is cultural vandalism which doesn’t get modern Britain, nor understand how to best grow the British economy.

The winners are big US tech and media companies. The losers British jobs and the creative economy.

Todays debate👇🏻

Starting soon. Labour is calling on Conservative MPs to join with us, stand up for jobs and our world leading creative industries and stop the Channel 4 sell off.

Read the motion we’re debating below and watch here.

The government’s Channel 4 sell off sells out Britain’s creative industries, undermining jobs and prosperity in the nations and regions.

With many urgent priorities like tackling the cost of living crisis it beggars belief that Ministers are fixating on this cultural vandalism

The government’s decision to sell off Channel 4 -one of Britain’s cultural crown jewels -will kill off our film industry and cost jobs and businesses in the regions and nations.

My ⁦⁦@yorkshirepost⁩ article on Labour’s debate today in Parliament

Confirmed that Harriet Harman will chair the privileges committee investigation into Boris Johnson. Replacing Chris Bryant who recused himself because he's commented so much on the case.

Five years on and still waiting for answers, justice, accountability.

Greater Manchester stands with #Grenfell - now and always.

Greatest sympathies to the families of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira. This terrible news reminds us of the important work that journalists do, taking risks, sometimes to their own lives, to tell stories and highlight injustices around the world.

This #LonelinessAwarenessWeek, I want my older constituents who are feeling lonely to know that there’s support available. @Age_UK have a number of resources such as:

NEW: GDP figures show UK economy shrank by 0.3% in April.

Really worrying.

Instead of addressing structural weaknesses, all the Tories have are sticking plasters.

Labour will create a stronger, more secure economy - by boosting our energy, supply chain and business security.

We will be holding a vigil on Tuesday to mark the 5th anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy.

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩it’s almost worse when you get so many at the start 😬

After 12 years of failure, the Tories have no plan to fix the housing crisis.

Labour would prioritise first time buyers, empower leaseholders and build genuinely affordable homes.

"Labour’s task in this new world order is to stand up for the labour interest by building a fairer and more resilient national economy across the villages, towns and cities of the UK, creating jobs you can raise a family on in every community."

The Games are a huge opportunity to showcase the best of Britain. Organisers are working hard to achieve this.

The Mayor and Ministers must redouble efforts to fill vacancies so local people can get on or up the jobs ladder and be part of something great

Over 300,000 music fans will descend on Greater Manchester this weekend.

The biggest weekend of the year so far.

This will generate around £21,700,000 to the local economy. Transport, hotels, bars, restaurants, local suppliers etc.'s going to be 70 degrees and sunny!

The choice is clearer than ever before:

Divided Tories propping up Boris Johnson with no plan to tackle the issues you are facing.

Or a united Labour Party with a plan to fix the cost of living crisis and restore trust in politics.

Labour will get Britain back on track.

CUT OUT AND KEEP: I've been crunching numbers in case of a vote of no-confidence to compare results
If the rebels get:
121 votes: Johnson will have done as badly % wise as John Major in 1995
133 votes: Worse than May in 2018
147 votes: Worse than Thatcher v Heseltine in 1990

Liverpool fans have been treated terribly by UEFA and the French authorities. Ministers must press them to stop scapegoating supporters, apologise and learn lessons. Paris reminds us justice for Hillsborough still hasn’t happened.

My response to @IanByrneMP Urgent Question

40 new hospitals were promised, the promise has been broken, and now rows within government are delaying vital hospital improvements and costing us all more money.

It’s a waste that patients and taxpayers can’t afford.

I’ve asked the NAO to investigate.

Quite some letter. Interesting to see the unnecessary privatisation of Channel 4 cited as one of his policy disagreements.

It has been clear in recent weeks there is significant opposition to this policy on their own side. Ministers remain tin-eared, now to their cost.

Jesse Norman @Jesse_Norman

I have supported Boris Johnson for 15 years, for the London Mayoralty and for PM. Very sadly, I have written to him to say I can no longer do so, for the reasons set out below.
