People on #Tyneside are facing #CostOfLivingCrisis #busfare rises & reduced services. I asked Govt the question I have asked many times before: when can we expect to see our #bus fares 'levelled down' to London rates - £1.65 to cross the entire metropolitan area (+30 miles!)
Thank you for letting us know - cleanup continues! Glad it was a success.
@SimonBird_ @NewcastleCC @ChiOnwurah Thanks for letting us know, cleansing is important to us, and we are putting huge resources into the post clean up and surrounding areas. Because this year was so well supported and enjoyed by many, the clean up will go into the weekend and possibly early next week.
I’m thrilled to see Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson sworn in today as the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court! As a former public defender, she’ll bring an invaluable perspective to the bench. I also want to thank Justice Breyer for his extraordinary public service.
At core of the #HorizonScandal was the belief that workers are dishonest & #tech infallible. Decent working people were imprisoned then made to wait years for justice, some did not live to see it. Govt must quickly deliver compensation for this horrific miscarriage of justice.
Currently at @codingblackfems #CBFFest2022 🙌🏾

Seeing a role model in @ChiOnwurah, whom I wasn’t aware of until today reinforces the importance & impact of #representation

Really great discussion on the contribution of Physics to our national & regional economies & how a @UKLabour would look to address the barriers to Physics realising its full economic potential.
Interesting @IndustryForum discussion on "Can physics supercharge the UK economy" with @ChiOnwurah Prof. Martin Freer VP of @IOP, @terrypollard COO of @OxfordBrain, @HiraVirdee CEO of @Lumi_Space #Innovation #Physics #commercialisation #SMEs #IP

I was honoured to host a @UKLabour reception for Black, Asian and minority ethnic business leaders yesterday.
We were joined by inspiring leaders and entrepreneurs to celebrate their success.
Thanks to speakers @RachelReevesMP, @vaughangething, @Moslek_Uddin, and Serlina Boyd
#BacklogBritain means delays in the justice system, and for rape cases there is a huge mental health impact for victims, who cannot get help because of delays in the mental health system responding to their needs! Britain deserves better than this!
Its Thursday, is @TheHoppings clean up still going on, @NewcastleCC or is this how it's going to be left?
Walking dog on Town Moor post @TheHoppings_ polluted by hundreds of cans and plastic bottles and general crap (inc used nappies) hidden in long grass. Major pollution. Needs a better litter pick. Disgusting! @NewcastleCC @ChiOnwurah
“Zara believed that a woman should be able to walk home.”
Please, take the time to read every word of this tribute to Zara Aleena by her family. I’m not sure I’ve read anything quite like it before.

Alex, a member of Ada's Citizens' Biometrics Council: 'We believe in this technology's potential. But there's a paradox with the ease that it can be accessed and used, compared to its effect on communities.'
Read the Council's recommendations: https://www.adalovelaceinstitute.org/project/citizens-biometrics-council/
.@ChiOnwurah MP, Shadow Minister for Science, Research & Digital: 'We need a regulatory framework to reflect the potential for harm as well as good.
Technology should not be something that's done to people. They should be empowered and feel in control of, and connected to it.'
Ten years of #austerity economics have slashed national and local government capacity. I asked the Minister whether he thought these cuts had left our public services in a resilient position to face #COVID and a cost of living crisis? He seemed to think they had!
I am delighted that, following my raising the issue of visas to allow the Ukraine Freedom Orchestra & Kyiv Symphony Orchestra to perform here, UK Govt is waiving the fees & helping to expedite visas
@aborchestras https://twitter.com/pritipatel/status/1542108428944003072
Today, I have waived the visa fees for two Ukrainian orchestras coming to the UK to perform at classical music events this summer, including the @BBCProms and @EdIntFest. The UK welcomes you and we continue in our unwavering support for Ukraine. #WeStandWithUkraine

Yes, well someone steeling signally cable actually
@ChiOnwurah @DrRosena @UKParliament Just to clarify as there’s no strike action today, this is the everyday train chaos the Tories think is fine and not the train workers strike chaos which the Tories think is abhorrent.
Imagine how I feel! https://twitter.com/tobyperkinsmp/status/1542104030725509120
I will never unsee Dominic Raab’s wink from the despatch box at Angela Rayner.

@ChiOnwurah Excellent question. British women visiting one of these states who suffers a miscarriage. What are her rights? Or US women from one of these states who miscarries while she is here in UK. Would we allow data of this nature gathered in the UK to be transferred to the US?
#RoevWade #SupremeCourt decision is an attack on women's bodily autonomy & data will be on the frontline. Women's health, location, spending cld be evidence for the prosecution in the US, yet this data is freely trafficked by big #tech companies. The Minister had no response.

Britain’s backlog is a result of a decade of Tory mismanagement and sheer incompetence.
Britain deserves better.
The Tories must get a grip now, stop with their sticking plaster approach and sort out the bottlenecks and delays they’ve caused.
@lucyallan Can’t MP’s put up with a bit of “haranguing?” I mean he might get on people nerves a bit but that’s about the size of it. It’s hardly threatening? Or indeed he doesn’t use threatening words or behaviour. If he did, the law was sufficiently equipped to deal with it before this?
Zero tolerance for racism should mean just that. Piquet is old enough to know better, F1 needs to act.
It’s more than language. These archaic mindsets need to change and have no place in our sport. I’ve been surrounded by these attitudes and targeted my whole life. There has been plenty of time to learn. Time has come for action.

Privilege to attend the service of thanksgiving for the life of Lord Frank Judd of Portsea. Frank was a Labour hero and a Portsmouth great. A fitting tribute to him and his public service today
Brilliant to see a room full of people passionate about UK science, as I gave opening key note @UKParliament #LinksDay22 . I stressed the #economic value of science for the whole of UK, the importance of international collaboration & the challenge & opportunity of #climatechange
😳 Very weak response from @GOVUK benches & FO Min Amanda Milling to US Abortion Rights UQ in HoC —We need far more than it’s “a backwards step”/“a matter of conscience”
Extremely lacking!!!
Right wing gov politicising womens bodies in the pursuit of culture wars! @ChiOnwurah 👏

Net zero is a global challenge that’s inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers - @ChiOnwurah speaking at @RoyalSocBio #LinksDay22 @SfAMtweets
Constituents sometimes ask me what difference #climatechange will make to them - well a 30-40% in rainfall increase by 2050, warmer air holds more water so when it does rain, more rain falls in a short time - so that's more #toonmonsoon events causing chaos & costing millions.
