On this day 40 years ago, General Moore, reported to the Commander-in-Chief, “The Falkland Islands are once more under the Government desired by their inhabitants. God Save the Queen.” A fitting service in St Margaret’s Church to remember those who helped liberate the islands.

Forty years ago #OTD, British forces liberated the Falkland Islands. They had carried out that toughest of operations, an opposed amphibious assault, at a distance of 8,000 miles. Their victory restored freedom and democracy, not only to the Falklands, but also to Argentina.

#OnThisDay in 1982, QE2 returned home to Southampton from the Falklands War.

On board were over seven hundred survivors from HMS Ardent, HMS Antelope, and HMS Coventry, which had all been sunk during the conflict.

These are #Ukrainian defenders in their positions. They sleep in cold trenches, so we can sleep in our homes 🏡.

Brave men and women are defending the Ukrainian borders, also making Europe a safe place to live.

An interesting read: From the Today programme to Twitter, the addiction to Partygate has led to an outpouring of political prejudice dressed up as reporting. https://www.mailplus.co.uk/edition/news/media/189419/the-remainstream-tv-medias-hysterical-anti-boris-obsession-is-nothing-less-than-an-attempted-coup?collection=10215&&contentLayout=News

Had a lovely meal at George’s tonight. Michael George Hannides came here from Cyprus in 1936 with hardly a penny to his name. He eventually saved enough to buy the food license at the cafe he worked in, so, in 1940, he founded George’s. The restaurant is still run by his family.

Where better to start the #PlatinumJubilee celebrations than with those who have served Her Majesty with such distinction, the Southampton Veterans Centre. Tracey and Colin (too busy to be in a Picture) are brilliant and have created the centre from scratch. Very proud of them.

👑 On the first day of the #PlatinumJubilee weekend and the anniversary of The Queen’s Coronation, we look back on Her Majesty’s life of service from her time as a young Princess supporting the war effort to her extraordinary commitment to her role as Monarch.

Congratulations Bradford on becoming #CityofCulture2025 Very disappointed for Southampton but the team have much to be proud of. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, levelling up is about opportunity not geography. This evening it looked like geography again. Not good enough.

The title for UK City of Culture has been hotly contested and I’ve been so impressed by the quality of the bids.

However, there can only be one winner, and I’ll be announcing who that is live from Coventry on @BBCTheOneShow tonight. Can’t wait !

It’s been the greatest honour serving as Mayor and I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported me. Southampton is the most wonderful place and I’m thankful to everyone who works so hard to make this city great.

We were thrilled to host the last official visit from the Mayor, @axhoughton before the new 800th Mayor is inaugurated today at the Mayor Making Ceremony in the Guildhall. The Mayor was invited to talk to the Academy Student Parliament as part of a series of external lectures.
